Talk about improbable, if Coach Groce wins against Rutgers, Illinois goes 500 in Big Ten Conference play. Who knows he could both save his job and get an invite to the Big Dance; stranger things have happened.

He needs to, not only beat Rutgers, but must advance in the B1G Tourney. It's going to be fun to watch.

Rutgers is 2-15 in the B1G and just got clocked by Maryland.

It will be RU's Senior day,but would think Ill. should be able to win this one.

Ill. gets ahead early, the RAC will be a ghost town.

IN the graphic I saw pre game it looked like they were sitting in the bye with Michigan and then Purdue Next. That would be a stiff road. Board is feeling good about what he has always said "we want to play our best ball in March" save for a few who offer up his Conference records at UI and OHio as well as his usual Januaries. Malcolm and Coach both with on camera emotions and tears are jerking at the hearts of the Illini nation hard.

In another thread they attribute Malcolm to Weber when I distinctly remember Nunn and Hill and maybe Tate on our board and maybe a trip down here. I do remember sitting with Coaches at Flying to the Hoop watching Simeon play and coach meeting with Simeon Coaches.

Tough loss in New Brunswick today takes the Illini off the bubble. Not looking good.

He's a goner now. Still dream about what it would have been like having Groce for one more year after Sweet 16 with Caris LeVert.

Well, they are talking about this over on HawkTalk:

https://twitter.com/highmajorscoop/status/840948223229452288

They aren't necessarily buying it, but it has few mentions over there. Could this nightmare come to pass?

One guy said:

"I think it has to be Groce if he is interested, I'd think they'll be some mid-majors (Dayton if Archie goes to NC State for instance) that will take a look at him though---but if he wants it, he'd be a great hire. He can recruit the Midwest and I would think keeping guys would be easier with a fairly successful Big 10 coach who knows the MAC and Ohio well."

Other vehemently disagreed. I hope that the naysayers win out. ;-)

I have read Groce's name in connection to the open Duquesne job.

I'm sorta selfishly hoping UD makes a run in the tourney, Archie gets lured away and opens up a spot for Groce. He'd stay in his midwest recruiting sweet spot. Would qualify as a top 3 in a conference spot. Great fan support. Would be a perfect stepping stone (if he had success) to eventually move back to B1G - maybe for his old boss Thad some day.

Probably not, but I can dream.

Funny..... but if that happened and the Flyers could get a game at X, they might actually have a chance to beat them there..... Something that has not happened since the Carter administration IIRC.

And maybe an appearance of OHIO on the schedule in UD Arena?

A nice tribute and good bye. He failed to reach expectations but those players will be better men for the experience. I know many players here still love the guy and turn to him when they need to...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q1V0ZH7tFM&app=desktop

Same for Rhodes, Ku and a few more stellar humans that are family for life.

Dayton arguably is a better program than Illinois. My guess is that if Groce were hired there, it would be because 3 others turned the job down.

He didn't schedule Ohio when he was at Illinois so I doubt he would schedule us at Dayton.

I say again, as I did when Groce left and when Christian left, part of the buyout package should be a requirement that if you leave for a power 5 school, you must play a game in the Convocation Center within the next 3 seasons. Failure to do so would require an IMMEDIATE $100,000 payment to the Ohio Athletic Department.

UD had such a clause in Brian Gregory's contract. Ga Tech owed UD a home-and-home and they played it.

Thanks for that share! Other than on one occasion, for a couple minutes, I never got to personally know or speak to the guy. That said, he always impressed me as tenacious, genuine, and as driven as any coach of any college basketball team that I follow, that I've ever seen. I'll root for his team wherever he is as long as he's coaching.
