I read somewhere that the MVC was looking to add two schools to replace Wichita State. Valpo and Murray State perhaps?

Long discussion on JMV's show on 1070 the fan with Greg Rakestraw and JMV about Valpo. Not sure where to look for the podcast but it may be worth a listen when it gets posted. Rake seems pretty astute when it comes to the Horizon and Valpo

Valpo already fits in their existing footprint and would they not be rejoining Loyola as a conference mate?

Gives them a tighter cluster of states and keeps travel times down.

Kind of crazy to think that Evansville will be one of the further away teams as Chicago, Terre Haute, Peoria and Bloomington are 3 hours or less.

Don't realize how long Indiana is but the travel time from Evansville to Valpo is only about 30 minutes less than it is from Des Moines!

Valpo seems like a perfect fit. Wondering if Belmont might be a good addition as well.

Only made it down to Evansville once in 5 decades and that was because of hoops. Before I69 you did not have much choice to get there. Roads seemed to end at Bloomington and that corner (the Pocket City) seemed to have more ties to Cincy and St Louis than Indy. See a lot more Cards fans from down there than us Reds fans would like. Highway 41 was a major trek up from Memphis/Nashville and the south during the war (.... rolling down HWY 41) and the highway many bluesmen took to Chicago before Interstates, passenger train decline, cessation of intercity busses and hitchiking laws.

The point is well taken that many conferences are getting larger while this one is becoming more compact. Certainly the footprint is smaller than the Horizon seems to be more like the Old Big Ten prior to PennSt and the more recent additions.

I thought Belmont would be a great fit for the MVC as well. Good TV Market, and what seems like a natural fit in the same way Valpo is. It would be a fun conference to follow adding those two schools, that's for sure.

I don't think Belmont would the OVC if the Valley offered. They like where they are and like being a "big fish" in the small pond that is the OVC.

I enjoy your stories of old road trips. I've taken HWY 41 once, and I must say, what an enjoyable drive through parts of Americana. One day I hope to drive what's left of Rte 66, having done parts of it, I'm thirsting to do the entire thing.

I've paid attention to Valpo a lot more the last few years because the wife went to law school there — so we catch some mid-week games on the ESPN app — and I think this is a good move for them. They fit in that conference quite nicely with Evansville and Indiana State in the MVC.

Didn't the MVC say they were sticking with 10 after adding Valpo?

I'm sure that is actually true. 10 is the perfect number for a basketball conference in my opinion.

We were on 66 south of Joliet on the motorcycles a couple of years back...what used to be a 4 lane now travels in the 2 northbound lanes in places and some have a clear view of I55 to the west. Through the southwest places like New Mexico it is I40 or the frontage road, I rode portions on a bicycle as I made my way from San Diego to Chicago one summer. ...all along it though you can find old restaurants, hotels and places that try to preserve it. No doubt it is still one of the most remembered and celebrated roads in history. My next goal is to leave INdiana and go to Denver going out on US40 (the old National Road) and coming back US 36. You might like to read a book by William Least Heat Moon called Blue Highways. A teacher who clapped out an old van and took a lap of America never touching an Interstate.

This makes me think of all the weekend backroads road trips I want to take in my truck. Not sure I have faith it would make it all the way to Colorado though. Right now, I just want to make it to Athens and back. ;)

This is a neat (really coffee table) book about a bicyclist who rode from coast to coast on the Lincoln Highway. Enjoyed his pages about some stops in Ohio, incluing Massillon. Some great photographs (about 250!) as well.

That is cool...not much of a Ford guy but rebuilding it and getting it road worthy would be cool ...my favorite road books Blue Highways is tops but Travels With Charlie comes to mind as I look at your truck. Jack Kerouac's toilet paper manuscript and a few others I have read ....though Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maint. has been a tome to slog through for me. I like the truck. Bed in the back and rubbermaid totes would do me fine. I like the Lincoln Highway book mentioned as I have been on a bunch of it ....going out to Robert Morris, NIUm a bunvh of it around Iowa and Ames and even a trek through Carson City after a wrong turn with my 3rd son navigatin out of Tahoe. One of my favorite sections is on 50 going to Tahoe from my bros house in Sacto

AMerica is awesome. So much to see and do when you get off the interstate. Like a season in basketball the journey is the best part.

Thanks for the comments on the beast. It's definitely been work. Still lots to go, but it rolls down the road.

I wonder who the Horizon League brings in now? Someone from the Summit League? The number of teams willing to make the move can't be very large.

I do not think any of the Dakota schools would go even if invited. Maybe IUPUI or IPFW look because the Horizon is close to them, but I am not sure any Summit team would go. However, what if the Summit offers Oakland to come back to the Summit?
