Hearing from sources up in Columbus that he is out after 2018. I think the blame lies with his health not being up to snuff and in turn leaving it to assistants to go get "top recruiting classes," of which none really have panned out.

That said, who do they go gunning for?

He's done now. Tough timing for incoming coach as far as getting "their" players.

Yikes, that got sped up to now. He is officially done.

Since Archie Miller is in Bloomington and from all accounts was the one, who do they go get? I'm looking around in-state and the only two coaches to go get are at schools well-established. Usually I'd go pluck one of them but they don't seem incline to leave their jobs.

You guys remember that time Thad Matta intentionally got himself thrown out of a game so that Dennis Hopper could remember how good of a coach he was, beat alcoholism, and establish a precious memory with his son? That was awesome.

If Billy Donovan isnt happy with his OKC gig, then he is exactly what OSU needs. A proven winner and recruiter.

Just guessing here, but the timing isn't awful if you are going after a pro coach like Billy Donovan, and they will make a run at him. Whether he would take the job is an entirely different question. Chris Holtmann might also be on the list.

I'm trying to think along with the AD here, and I don't think they'd have made the move at this point if they weren't reasonably certain they could bring in someone better.

BTW it is my understanding that the OSU Bd of Trustees has a regularly scheduled meeting Friday...

Matta may be one of the most decent guys in the profession. I can remember Saul thanking the people at OSU for all they did for him and his wife during her cancer treatment, and I bet Matta did what ever he could to assist. He should land a sweet gig somewhere, like at BTN.

Ohio State waiting until this point cost Archie Miller millions of dollars, given the amount of leverage he would've had if both IU and Ohio State were open simultaneously, right?

There is none. That said, if there's unhappiness and the money is right it makes sense.

Any chance Coach Phillips is under consideration as a successor or would throw has his hat into the ring for consideration?

He and Urban Meyer coached at the same time at FL. Other than that, just a case of OSU going after the best that money can buy...

I would say no, and no. Ohio State fans want a bigger name than Saul, or that's my take.

According to this tweet from WSYX, Donovan is on the short list:

I'm of the opinion that there's almost no way that Sean Miller, Jay Wright, or Brad Stevens come to Ohio State. Tony Bennett is an intriguing option. I wonder if he's sexy enough to satisfy the locals.

Waiting until June 5th is a huge mistake in my opinion, and clearly a few others on here. They miss out on the best candidates, and that candidate is way, way behind the 8-ball for recruiting for the next year.

If Tony doesn't go down and we make the NCAA's then I say yes he is in the hunt.

But I think give this two years to play out based on his recruiting and you'll see Saul's name pop up for jobs. That said, no.

Do I understand this correctly, Coach Matta will be paid the remaining three years left on his contract? I hear he's a real nice guy. However, would any of our employers do the same for us if they didn't like the job we were doing? This seems something of a set up to me. The AD Gene Smith seems to have wanted Matta out. Why do this in June if you don't have an Ace in your hand? There are going to be a few nervous schools who are fearing their coach could get poached. I just heard one of those blow hards at the Fan say with regard to those schools and their players and fans; "screw them." I suppose he's too oblivious as to why some are really tired of that sort of arrogance, especially when it comes out of the wallets of those of us who live in this state.

Agree with OU-C. Cannot imagine Miller leaving sunny Tucson, Wright is entrenched at Villanova and Stevens is just getting started.

I will say this about the timing. Gene Smith did not get to where he is without having some smarts. Something has happened recently that prompted him to bring the situation to a head, and it wasn't just Bazeley bailing on the program. I think he found that the guy they'd want next year might be available now. Let's see if they can reel him in.

A contract is a contract. Mike Brown is being paid by the Cavs right now to coach against the Cavs.

My bets are on Billy Donovan. Maybe Brad Stevens, even though he's turned down shots at other places to stay in the league. I just can't see some of the others mentioned leaving where they are. It would take A LOT of money for some of these guys.

ESPECIALLY if they're citing ongoing health issues as part of the reason they're showing us the door

Let's face it, we're probably all in the wrong professions...
