I don't know how good we will be because we have so many young guys that could develope. We also have so many freshmen coming in that are so unpredictable. The last and maybe most unpredictable of all is Kevin Mickle. He could start or be Chandler Thomas. Who knows what will happen next year?

To me, the freshmen seem to be the most unpredictable. We have guys come in first year and get >25 mpg, then we have some that we have high hopes for but end up redshirting, or getting miniscule minutes. Hopefully we have far more people than minutes, but it rarely ends up being the case. But I can see some saying Mickle since few have seen him play.

Whatever became of him? Came to Ohio from Mizzou if I recall, and then went off the map. I was excited for his arrival too.

This reminds me of 2005. But Kirk's relationship with Fears is probably why. (No Sonny Troutman type guard returning on the current team though.)

I'm going to predict that we are going to be good and possibly really good.

I love the returning nucleus of Block, Dartis, Carter, Taylor and Laster. I think Trayvion Kirk is going to come in and start at the point from day 1. I think Ben Vander Plas is going to come in and be Jason Carter Part Deux. BVP not only broke the career scoring mark at his high school, he also set the career mark for assists. The more video I saw of him on youtube the more I love his game. Vander Plas, Butler and Gareri all are versatile players that like sharing the ball. We might have some rough patches early on as the freshman grow into their roles but I really like the makeup of this team.

I'm curious to see the competition between Butler and Kirk for playing time. I think Butler has the more college-ready demeanor and body. Kirk may ultimately be more suited for PG duties.

He averaged 10.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game there, with pretty similar numbers each of his 3 years.

I'm curious to see the two on the floor at the same time, assuming that happens. Also curious to see the potential of BVP/Gareri alongside with Carter.

I agree, he looks like the more pure point guard. We will see.

OUVan and Ohio69 nailed it. As disappointing as it is to unexpectedly lose your starting point guard, the fact that we signed a player of Kirk's caliber seemingly on the whim is one of the more impressive recruiting feats we've ever pulled off. The nucleus of Block, Dartis, Carter, Taylor and Laster is worth getting excited about...
But my dream where someone does a backflip over John Groce in the MAC finals and another backflip over Jaaron Simmons in round 1 of the big dance might just be the green Kool-Aid talking...

The green Kool-Aid must have taken in too much rain the last several days...that would be round 2 in the big dance....come on Optimist don't let the rain weaken your drink!

The freshman are the unpredictable and exciting part of the equation. But what is also unpredictable is how the other veterans will step up and improve. Dartis, Taylor and Block have two FULL years of experience playing real, true, tested minutes. Dartis is a 3-year starter and Block and DT have been key bench components for a year with Block starting last year. Laster is the one to be pumped for. I really think he can be a double-digit scorer for us. If we had those 4 back with Carter I would be excited for them as a starting 5. I could see Dartis starting at point to begin the season but I also could see Saul tossing Kirk or Butler into the fire. If our freshmen pan out even a bit I think we can make real noise in the league. For us to be successful we need the five returnees to play just a bit above the level from the previous year and we need 3 of the 5 newbies (Kirk, Butler, Vander Plas, Gareri, Mickle) to contribute significant minutes, points, rebounds and assists.

I've seen a few comments about Dartis potentially starting at PG. I don't understand where that idea started but I've not seen anything in the last two years that makes me think he can be a PG for anything over just a few minutes. He's really, really good at what he does, it's just not being a PG. Kirk, Butler, & Gollon (I think) are going to have to split at least 35 or so minutes of time at PG and do well for us to be successful.

You are right. Dartis is too good off the ball to be our PG. He may play some PG minutes here and there, but unless Gollon surprises, it's going to be the two Freshmen splitting PG duties.
