Stops at Butler under Brad and tO$U under Matta along the way. Dakich was on the radio describing him as "one of the best humans in the game of basketball that he had ever met"

Unfortunately, Kuwik is gone from the University of Dayton. Office has been cleared out. If they stay in-house, Tom Ostrom will get the job. Have to imagine Groce's name was quid pro guo from Katz (same as in the TOS days). I think they are giving Anthony Grant a courtesy run. Not sure why they don't just hire Matt McCall from Chattanooga and call it a day. Brannen and Whitford also involved.

We're all thinking the same thing. I'll add Dave's write up on it from the DDN:

Makes me wonder if this makes Groce to 'Kron more likely?

Bummer. I was actually getting excited to care about UD basketball for once. Oh well.

Yeah, young AD choked big time. If Grant's your guy, how does it take 5 days?

Also, I'm open to knowing if there's been any time in basketball history that a retread has achieved at a high level.

I was going to say I didn't think this was a terrible hire, but I forgot he got fired at Alabama. He did well at VCU, but Dayton is a far better job than Alabama. Maybe he just didn't get the support he needed down there.

Interestingly, I actually think it's a solid hire. It's not a flashy young hire like Archie was, but he is a solid coach. As for Bama, I mean, it's a football first school, where much like Ohio State, no one seems to care about basketball. The five days point that Ted makes is good. If he's your guy, how isn't this done in 2-3 days?

Who's out there still that might have been a young, exciting hire?

His career is very similar to John Groce's. Actually a bit better.

To me, Anthony Grant is about the worst thing you can do to a program. He'll be just good enough to not get fired.

First of all, everyone wins at VCU. Jeff Capel, Anthony Grant, Shaka Smart, Will Wade.

If he was such a desireable commodity, why was there no interest in him from anywhere else? The market is telling you something.

I'm also open to anyone telling me when a retread has succeeded at a high level.

As for young coaches, these names were all metioned as being involved in the process: Brannen from NKU, Davis from Bucknell, Whitford from Ball St St. and Muller from Illinois St.

I love Anthony Grant the person. I hope I'm wrong about his ability to succeed at Dayton.

Your retread question is a good one. It also reinforces that coaches like Grant and Groce need to strike when the irons hot and the cash is stacked high. Many only get one shot. If it works great. If not (ala Groce) then there's another batch of young guns that push you to the back. But at least your family is set financially for life.

I hear your points. Time will tell. I surely hope that he's more than just good enough not to get fired. The expectation seems to be set that being top-3 in the A10, and pushing for at-large bids annually are the expectations. Hopefully that continues. Retaining all of the incoming recruits is a key. There's quite a bit of talent there.

I like the hire. Former flyer that gets the culture and history.

Everybody wins at vcu. I just heard that very thought when they were discussing Dayton. Same words. Purnell. Gregory. Archie.

Retreads. Not sure if you put Steve Fisher or Bobby cremins in there or not.

I remember driving back from FL with Tommy when Alabama made the hire. We both thought it was a bad move that day. We spent the day listening to all the do.inoes fall that day. Was an interesting ride up. Stopped at Alumni gym in Lexington to get a shooting workout in that evening and there were still spots on the carousel moving that evening. Probably one of the most interesting carousels I can remember. And now he is out at the FF starting to think about getting on that thing next year

It will be interesting now to see where Groce ends up if he's to be hired as a head coach. There are very few middle ground jobs available and none of them are in the midwest. It's pretty much all low majors and Georgetown.

Kuwik not going to IU with Archie Miller. Article in today's Dayton Daily News says he might be meeting with new coach Anthony Grant about staying at Dayton.

VERY interesting. I wasn't previously aware that Devin Davis was in the coaching ranks.
