can someone with more knowledge tell us if they think this is a big deal. I thought that I've read previously that he has helped a lot with recruiting.

Looks like he's heading to Chattanooga where Walt Offut is.

yeah, I'd really like to know the rest of the story here. Somewhat unusual to be leaving the staff this late...

I don't know where he ends up in the pecking order for the Mocs...probably above Offutt since this is Walter's first on-the-floor college coaching job.

I think this is definitely a big deal. Fuss was our main recruiter up in the Columbus area if I'm not mistaken.

Something good to ask about tonight for those going to the Athens edition of the Caravan.

Sarcasm: "Cmon Saul nows the time. Swing for the fences for a change, hit a home run for ONCE. Bring on Gary Trent as an asst and I'm sure Jr will decommit from Duke and head to Athens."

Just getting it out there before someone enlightens us with this view.

On a serious note, I will miss Aaron and his family. Good coach, good people. Wishing them well at Chatt!

Is there some sort of connection that I am not aware of with either the head coach or perhaps family ties? I realize Walt Offut is there, but I would find it rather odd if an up and coming assistant whose main recruiting responsibility has been in Ohio would go to Chattanooga. After all the new regime in Chattanooga has yet to establish itself, while the Bobcats are more of an established named than than the Mocs as far as college basketball is concerned (I hope.)

He's 100 miles from Atlanta. The population of the Atlanta area is 5.7 million. My mother-in-law from the old country could recruit solid basketball players out of Atlanta while baking a cake.

We should thank Fuss for staying as long as he did and proved his value to the program by sticking around for three head coaches. Assistants move around. It's cool. I know he has a young child, so maybe they wanted to move to a bigger city. Who knows?

Someone on twitter suggested hiring Dante Jackson. He was an assistant at Air Force last year. Wonder if Ricardo Johnson is ready to move up.

Both of those would be great fits.

I had mentioned Dante on Twitter because he is from Southeastern Ohio and was a grad assistant for us. I think he would really help us with recruiting. I had not thought of Rico. What a great catch he would be. I could see him fitting in really well with the current staff and helping us get some of those Kentucky recruits like we missed out on with Carson Williams (Still wish we would have beaten Northern Kentucky for him)!

It's typically good for coaches to expose themselves to different situations. He's been here 9 years and even though it's been with three different coaches it can't hurt to broaden his horizons. Chattanooga turning into Ohio South because not only do they have Walt and Aaron but they hired Tyler Dobratz as "Athletic Performance Person" which I guess is a type of strength and conditioning position.

This one sucks to lose. Really liked him as a person and coach. I will be interested to see how he does down in Chattanooga.

That said, I will be intrigued to see who they get to fill the Ohio pipeline slot on the staff. To me that has been invaluable the last few years and hopefully we can continue to go into Licking Co. and Columbus for kids like we've had, along with kids from across state we're in on this year.

You mentioned a similar thought about wishing we'd gotten Toles in another thread. Carson Williams looks good, but consider that if Ohio had Carson Williams, they probably wouldn't have Jason Carter. If they would have went after Toles, They probably don't get one of Kirk, or Butler. The comparison of Toles to Kirk/Butler is too soon to tell. The comparison of Carter vs Williams, thus far, looks like a pretty even comparison. Both are good looking players with good futures. It's just unlikely both could have come to Athens.

To your initial point, Ricardo would be an interesting add for recruiting Cincy/NKY. I loved him as a player. I know nothing about him as a coach, but his personality seems like he would be a fine addition to our staff.

Out of curiosity for anyone who was there, was there any conversation about Coach Fuss at last night's Caravan?

I think it's interesting that the Chattanooga announcement shows him as the video coordinator. Not much of a title, is that it?

Unless it's been corrected, it states he's "Assistant Coach" via the Tweet link that Jason Arkley shared.

You're right about that, but it seems strange to be that video coordinator would be listed as his identifying function

I see your point on Toles vs. Kirk/Butler. But I think we could have had a great 4-5 duo in Carter/Williams for 4 years. I saw Northern play many times on TV and online and the kid just knew how to throw his body around and was a more physical Carter.

Chattanooga announced three hirings today. Fuss is an assistant coach. Roman DiPasquale is video coordinator. Reading comprehension is lacking among some BA faithful today.

From the release:

CHATTANOOGA---Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball coach Lamont Paris announced three new members to his first staff Thursday morning. It includes completing his on-court staff with Ohio University assistant Aaron Fuss being offered and accepting the position.

Fuss spent nine seasons with the Bobcats. He started as the director of basketball operations before ascending to assistant coach in 2012. He worked with three head coaches – John Groce (2009-12), Jim Christian (2013-14) and Saul Phillips (2015-17) – over that stretch with unprecedented success as part of the equation.

During his tenure, the Bobcats reached the postseason six times with two NCAA Tournament appearances going 3-2 in those dance incursions. The 2010 team toppled Georgetown before falling to Tennessee during its Elite 8 run.

They made it back to the tournament in 2012 beating Michigan and South Florida prior to an overtime loss to North Carolina in the Sweet 16. He's reunited on the Mocs staff with a key player from that run, fellow assistant Walter Offutt who earned All-East Regional Tournament team honors for his play.

The Bobcats won 20 or more games five times including a school-record 29 in 2012. They captured two MAC titles along the way in a league that saw just five teams win the title over that stretch: Akron (3), Ohio (2), Buffalo (2), Kent State (1) and Western Michigan (1). Ohio won 60.5 percent (167-109) of its games since Fuss' arrival in 2008.

He began his career at Ohio State as a student manager. Upon graduation in 2005, Thad Matta elevated Fuss to graduate manager. The Buckeyes tallied a 61-10 mark in his two seasons in that role winning the Big Ten both campaigns en route the 2007 NCAA National Championship game losing to Florida.

Fuss brings a young family along with him. He's married to the former Jill Samples. They have two children, Emma and Theodore.

Paris also added to the support staff hiring Roman DiPasquale (video coordinator) and Tyler Dobratz (athletic performance) with the latter coming in conjunction with Director of Athletic Performance Chad Pearson.

Dipasquale comes to Gig City from Stanford where he served in the same role the past two seasons. He's also worked at the University of Portland (director of basketball technology) and with the Philadelphia 76ers (assistant video coordinator) since graduating from Wisconsin in 2011.

Dobratz was most recently at Ohio University in strength and conditioning. He assisted with the football, men's basketball and volleyball programs while overseeing efforts in women's swimming and diving, men's and women's golf and hockey. He's also worked as head strength and conditioning coach at Lake Superior State and served as an intern at Wisconsin.

oddly enough, according to UTC's message board the two finalists for the coaching position were an unnamed candidate(later revealed to be Fuss) and Kevin Kuwik. At the time Kuwik was thought to be the first choice.
