Figured this deserved it's own thread compared to the extensive transfer list thread. The Zips are going to be a completely different team by the time the Bobcats meet them for the first time next season.

A list of folks who have gone bye bye, with Isaiah Williams the most recent to decide:

Aaron Jackson
Antino Jackson
Noah Robotham
Josh Williams
Tavian Dunn-Martin
Ty Dalton
Michael Hughes
Isiah Williams

Given the severity of this list, it's actually quite surprising guys like Jimond Ivey and Daniel Utomi have stuck around.

Also throw in Seniors Isaiah Johnson and Kwan Cheatham amongst those they lost.

That's 10 guys! The turnover this offseason for them is crazy.

All about perspective I guess. Akron is gonna struggle this coming season, but I expect next year they'll be back at the top.

Ohio at least still has pieces of the puzzle returning. Akron hasn't even found the puzzle they want to put together yet. They'll get there soon enough.

But with Dambrot and his "my guys don't ever do anything wrong" attitude now in Pittsburgh, we won't be able to count on three or four Ts from them every game.

I think they have like 5 transfers inked already. Most have to sit out this upcoming year, but some of them look pretty promising including two former four star guys.

They might be bad in 2017-2018, but I expect them to be back in contention the next year.

Ohio has had 2 losing seasons the past 10 years. Groce's first year and Saul's first year.

I expect Akron to have a losing season this year. People will overreact. Then they will be good again next year. (Not as good as Ohio though)

Some might but I think most people will know the story. Even if they had only lost the two seniors they might have struggled just with the coaching change.

As weak as the MAC will be this season, I wouldn't be surprised that the Zips have a winning season.

i just have this horrible feeling that Groce is going to do very well at Akron, and give us fits in years to come. It could be worse. He could be at Miami ;-)

I have no doubts about this. No reason why he can't get the same caliber players at Akron that he got at Ohio.

I'm curious, other than the number of good players graduating, what lends you to think the MAC will be weak? I'm not saying you're wrong, but there are some teams that are probably going to be just as good as they were last year. Off the cuff, I'm thinking of Ball State, UB, Ohio, and Kent as being pretty good.

I guess what I'm saying is, just because known talent leaves or graduates doesn't mean to me that the MAC will be weak. I'm no expert on recruiting, so I can't speak to what everyone else has brought for 2017-18.

There are three ALL MAC players returning out of 15, our newcomer of year left. The MAC player of the year graduated and there was an unprecedented number of transfers from MAC schools and in return we picked up some very weak transfers.

Lol. Yes. Didn't stop Dambrot from dominating the MAC.

from what I can see Akron has just 3 scholarship players returning from last year's team-

29.2min/gm Jimond Ivey (RS)Jr, 10.2pts/gm
9.6min/gm Daniel Utomi (RS)So, 4.8pts/gm
5.9min/gm Emmanuel Olojakpoke (RS)So, 2.4pts/gm

they have 1 grad transfer that will be eligible immediately-

Malcolm Duvivier (RS)Sr, left school his senior year for "personal reasons". Career avg 6.6pts, 2.2rebs, 2.0asts.

5 true freshmen that can play immediately-

Virshon Cotton, PG **.
Torrey Patton, PG **.
Eric Parrish, SF **.
Jaden Sayles, PF **.
Mark Kostelac, C **.

There are 3 RS freshmen will have to sit out next season because of the transfer rule-

Eric Hester, PG ****, Florida.
Loren Jackson, PG ***, Long Beach State.
Deng Riak, PF ****, East Carolina.

All told it looks like Groce will have a 9 man rotation with 1 senior, 1 junior, 2 sophomores and 5 freshmen. Counting the 3 transfers that's 8 scholarships committed to the freshman class.

A couple of the true freshmen could end up redshirting their second years after the team has a bit more depth in order to balance out the classes a bit more.

Or they'll transfer in a year or two when they get recruited over. ;)
