Knowing Chris he wrestled with the decision on many level from personal relationships to the good of the Butler Community. Ultimately Money Talks but it is a good insight into the process

If you read closely, you will probably see a slight of Ohio.

Borna, I've heard similar from you regarding players' Convo-access, so I'm assuming he's talking about Ohio unless Gardner-Webb has a major gym sharing issue as well. Which I'm guessing they do too.

Not sure how you see that as a slight. I mean I'm sure OHIO would gladly accept your donation for a basketball only practice facility.

I assume for Chris Holtmann OU is never on his mind unless someone else brings it up. Mid majors can't afford basketball only practice facilities. I hope OU does not consider building one.

I would back track a little on that statement....

There are mid-majors (that don't generate Gonzaga-type money) that do have basketball practice facilities

Murray State

Western Kentucky

I could go on.

Basically the point is, there are a lot of mid-major programs that have basketball-only practice facilities

He is most definitely talking about Butler. THe Practice gym to the left of the basketball offices is atrocious and has needed to be upgraded for years. YOu can probably find a discussion on that same board.

As far as us...I do not think anyone proposes a basketball only practice gym. We do need an auxilary gym that can accommodate volley and hoops and maybe have a small weights area for inseason lifts. When Volley and or hoops have visiting teams in for games the juggling that has to go on to schedule practice time for our athletes of both genders and the visiting team needing to get their practice time as well. I don't really think anyone here has alluded to a basketball only
practice gym. I would agree with you on that point. When Volley/men's and women's hoops/dance team/cheer and others are needing time and PING/Phys Ed is off limits it gets a bit dicey to accommodate athletes/classes and practices/games

I wasn't suggesting Ohio should build one. I was simply saying there are a lot of mid-majors that have them. And yes, a lot of them are the ones that don't play football (or play FCS)

Would be nice if Ohio had one....would help in recruiting to show off a shiny new toy....but unless it's privately funded (like Rider's) then I don't think it's a possibility

(Hey Gary Trent...you got a couple extra bucks lying around???)

I understand. Its Summer and without the distraction of actual games my growing disdain for ncaa excess is coming through in these topics. I need a fun home game quickly, or some real football roster news... or something...

Glad you said it as it was coming through....thick.

My want for a practice gym is pretty nuts and bolts. We have great programs and great student athletes that get their degrees and go to class for the most part. Moving practices around and having no place to go when the convo is in use and Ping/Rec facilities being off limits is problematic when you are part of it and comes up on recruiting visits. If we are wanting good kids who go to class and want to be in a place where they can get in a gym and work when they have down time it is nice to have that extra gym. Players can't get better if they have no place to polish their craft. I know I have been sitting in the Convo at 1030 pm waiting for a court while a visiting team practiced because someone wanted "to get some shots up" and I had volunteered to leave the Cat's Eye to rebound and throw passes as they made cuts off a chair

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't recall having the issue of finding a gym to practice in because the Convo was occupied. That was a long time ago, but still. Why can't we use the courts at Ping Center once in while?

If I'm not mistaken it's because Ping is part of the Recreation department and obviously that's not affiliated with athletics. They don't always see eye to eye. Plus, Ping is already packed full of students.

;-) Ping is very expensive and mostly off limits, and there are probably 10-12 conflicts a season,

I'd say you're missing something....

Pretty well known HPER courts are off limits as is Ping. I think there were times in the last decade the guys have run down in the gym off State Street because there was no where else to go...

As a non student I have been thrown out of Ping a few times when I was asked to stand under a basket and rebound for players. "This is for Students Only Sir, You Must Leave Immediately". Every once in a while guys meet over there and run a few games. IIRC Groce was trying to find a place a few years back in season to have a single practice d/t a scheduling problem and was told NO.

Grover is being remodeled and I know they have removed at least one of the courts and I believe both have been removed. According to the Grover web page where the facilities of the building are listed, it appears they have removed all the gyms.

With IPF/MPF complete, Sook Academic Center paid for and just to be built, what would the next 100% donor funded capital project be, if not a practice gym for BB/VB/Wrestling? I understand that some of the few deep pockets Ohio has may be exhausted for a bit, but it's not forever. And it's not all.

Not saying it's coming soon, but I don't think it's too far fetched.

I played basketball for several years at noon three days a week when I was not a student but an employee. At that time Ping was open to three classes of people -- students, alumni and employees. The latter two had to pay to get in, but you could get in. Is this no longer true? I realize borna that you are not in any of these categories, but it certainly wasn't "students only" at that time.

It's been 20 years since Grover was gutted and all athletic facilities were removed, that project began once Ping was operational.

Actually for awhile there were two courts still in Grover. My Ping noon basketball group once got permission to use them a time or two when Ping was closed for some reason. This was circa 1995. I believe BTC told us that they have now been removed in a more recent renovation.

Ping opened over winter break during the 1995-96 school year. I remember because I lamented the fact that it opened just as I left school. I somehow talked them into letting me pay for a winter quarter membership though since I was still in Athens. It was after that when Grover was totally gutted and became a very nice classroom building for the HHS college.
