This will be different. Half-court, playground scoring, one ten minute period.

KD, Steph, and Klay might as well win that, too.

$ - Usually the answer to anything

Besides - We have how many different versions of running, jumping, rolling/tumbling, throwing various objects, shooting various objects, navigating ice, snow, water, etc. - And most all with solo, pairs, teams, various size teams - and even combinations of many of these.....

Sounds like good entertainment to me! Will I be influenced to buy Pepsi or Coke?

Since they're using playground scoring i wonder if they'll also play possession.

I doubt it but I hope so. And it's nice to see a popular urban game (amongst other places) get the recognition it deserves.

I am against this. It's more like an X game in winter. I doubt I'll watch this. OTOH, I'm an avid Olympics basketball fan. I keep the TV tuned to the all basketball cable channel. Bring on China vs Australia.

So I'm wondering if they'll have completely separate teams or if players on the regular roster will make up the 3-on-3 teams.

Found the official rules:
http://www.fiba.com/documents/2016/01/29/3x3%20Rules%20of...

And video of the 2016 World Championships:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD9M4XiaqLM

Those aren't NBA players, but maybe for the Olympics they'd make a team out of the first four players left off the national team? If not, I feel like Tommy Freeman, DJ Cooper, and DeVaughn Washington need to get the band back together.

This will be completely unwatchable UNLESS it consists of:

Make it take it
Call your own fouls (complete with arguments)
He Hate Me style jerseys and
White Men Can't Jump cut scenes

And-1 can just use this for their next highlight video. Two birds, one stone.

3 on 3 has been growing in Europe for a while. KVK has played for the National Team IIRC. TO gain stature enough to become an Olympic sport is a long road with National Governing Bodies representing individual countries needing to be in place. When we pushed Triathlon back in the 90s we worked with the Canadians and Commonwealth Nations as well as the European countries ensuring each country had an NGB in place and rules were consistent across the world with what we were using at Tri Fed. 3 on 3 obviously has enough infrastructure to warrant the addition.

I don't know who is in or out but a lot of folks grew up playing Macker and are pretty familiar with the concept. May be hard to get them out of the park in addition to their day jobs. https://twitter.com/tfreefor3/status/874103638746157056/p...

I agree with the X-Games reference to this.

A few years ago the Olympic Committee Wanted to get rid of wrestling, one of the original Olympic sports.

Why ?

To improve ticket sales and improve T.V. ratings.

The Olympics is no longer about the sports, but making money off of them.

I also have a problem with "manufactured" sports like synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and short track speed skating.

The same reason we have two versions of volleyball. They are totally different sports.

I would counter that they're quite similar, play by nearly identical rules and that the greatest difference is simply the number of players on a team.

I'd still rather see our favorite NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL stars play handball in the Olympics first.

I think characterizing 3-on-3 pick-up playground street ball as a "sport" is a stretch. Then again - there are quite a few Olympic events that aren't real "sports" already.

If this resembles Gus Macker, as I think someone mentioned earlier, then it will be a combination of basketball, wrestling (Greco-Roman and pro rasslin') and rugby. Hoping for more of a clean, pure style of basketball.

Don't forget to pack some Moon Pies to go with that RC.

Is the Zen-master going to coach the 3-on-3 since he perfected the triangle offense when he had Jordan and Pippin?

3-on-3 regular season OT hockey is bullcrap, that's for sure. Pro hockey wasn't meant to have 3 vs 3. Maybe it's the only way the bogus NHL officials can keep up and get the calls right. (yes, I am still pi55ed over a certain blown call in a certain Cup Final game 6 recently)
