watching Miami against Hartford. They look pathetic. Even worse than OHIO in the first half today, but this is the second half and instead of gaining on the opponent they are falling further and further behind -- down by 22 with 7:44 left.

Speaking of name problems, one announcer can't just say Miami. He always has to say "Miami of Ohio." Sounds like some A&M partisan who just can't call us "OHIO" because it might confuse someone who thinks A&M owns the word. And, btw, on the web cast today one of the announcers kept calling us "Ohio State." Now that's turnaround is fair play in my book. ;-)

These guys broadcast sports for a living. Why do they find the difference between Miami University, Ohio State and Ohio University so confusing? An average Joe walking down the street I can understand that. Aren't these guys looking up the school websites of the teams they are broadcasting on? I don't hear anyone confusing Virginia, Virginia Tech and VCU.

Well, Virginia Tech never tried for half a century to call themselves "Virginia." They used to be VPI, or Virginia Poly.

Miami (OH) is older than Miami (FL), but some of these yokels think it's the "real Miami." Yes, you're right, some of these professionals don't spend a lot of time looking at the actual history of the schools they cover.

The guy calling us "Ohio State" only caught himself once, and said, "Sorry, Ohio." The rest of the time he just said "Ohio State" and went on. He never once, that I can recall, called Indiana State, Indiana, because they were mentioning frequently that ISU beat IU in the first game of the season "by nearly 30 points."

I had a co-worker who graduated from Carnegie Mellon. When I told him where I graduated from I said Ohio University and he says "Miami University?" I correct him and he looks like I am bs-ing him that its Ohio University not Miami Ohio University. He then tells me he's always liked Ohio State and I tell him that Ohio St does really nothing for the state all they care about is their own research rankings. I find OU is confused with Miami or they are in disbelief that there is both an Ohio and Ohio St which is not at all uncommon as most states have that setup.

I used to think "Ignorance is Bliss" applied but then you have guys who are aggressively ignorant. Probably knows the difference between Penn and Penn State...or maybe he is just RFD.

I usually say....you would not call the place in Terra Haute Indiana, the place in East Lansing Michigan or put Illinois in Bloomington Normal...why insist Ohio is in Columbus? THe Fiami thing is being totally ignorant given that the U has marketed Miami as :"the U" for decades spawning the Miami(OH) phenomenon.

I have figured out that the sheep of the world are going to be douches no matter how much you try to help them.

I hate to find myself in the position of defending Miami, but they've played four games and the Hartford game was their first bad outing. Hartford is supposed to be pretty good this year, and also I think Miami just had an off game. I saw the second half and they made a run to make it more respectable late in the game.

I tend to agree with bornacats analysis of Miami in an earlier post. They will stumble some along the way but they are moving in the right direction. Will be dangerous in the MAC. Won't contend, though .

I recall when I was in the service in the 1960s and stationed in Florida that Miami U and U of Miami played each other. The headline in one of the local papers was clever: "Miami (OH) to play Miami (FL), Winner to Shed Brackets."

I saw a good amount of the game and came away with a similar impression. Their point guard picked up a technical in the first half and he was benched for it. They fell behind by 16 at half. When the PG returned in the second half he did a great job driving and kicking to open shooters but they just kept missing. They've shot well in two games so far this year and poorly in two so I'm not sure what kind of shooting team they are. Much like us they look like a work in progress but I thought they looked like they were going to be better than they have been.

I must be in a minority among BAers in that, in all my travels during which I consistently wear OHIO logo'd apparel, I've never - never - had anyone confuse Ohio with OSU or Miami OHio.

Heck, I am recalling a some years ago when I was returning to the States via Atlanta. The passport control agent looked at my Ohio logo'd cap and jacket and said, "Your Ohio guys really took it to Georgetown."

Once in Tokyo Narita a youngish woman saw my Ohio logo'd cap, smiled and said "Go Bobcats."

And so on.

BTW, I often describe OSU as Ohio's "much younger and much bigger sister." Always generates a smile.

My experience is quite different. Most folks who notice my Ohio jacket or cap ask about the Buckeyes or some Miami player like Big Ben.
I did have a guy in Albuquerque last week notice my jacket and said that we have the most beautiful campus. He was a BG grad and his dad often travelled to Athens on sales trips. But as I said, that is the exception.

Agreed. Have had the Fiami confusion which I just don't get, but one time I was in a store in Kalamazoo wearing my Bobcat shirt and I heard a women say to her husband, "I thought their colors were red and gray." In a triumphantly assured voice he replied, "It must be something for Saint Patrick's Day." She nodded.

I feel like if Miami was going all these years by Miami U. instead of Miami (OH) there wouldnt be as much confusion. Its like they see the colors of green & white, realize it cant be OSU so it must be Miami (OH). There is Boston College and Boston University, BU doesnt go by Boston (MA).

Thank you. If you guys want to pick on Miami (and of course you do; it's a rivalry), pick on a sport that actually had expectations coming into this season (e.g., football). Miami is currently 3-2 with a road win against an A-10 opponent and two wins over teams that were 20-game winners last season. We got blown out by Tulane, but they're 5-0 and look to be headed toward a solid season. The Hartford loss was bad, yes, but after losing the Weathers brothers and bringing in a new coaching staff, I can't say I'm disappointed by this start.
