I took a look at NCAA Tourney payouts per conference. Payouts are determined by games played by conference team. Amounts below assume conference splits pot equally among teams. (data source: https://herosports.com/ncaa-tournament/how-much-money-nca... )

The big winners:
Big 12 -- $2.56M per school
Big East -- $2.22M per school
ACC -- $2.05M per school
PAC-12 -- $1.99M per school
SEC -- $1.95M per school
Big Ten -- $1.83M per school
WCC -- $1.19M per school

The losers:
Southern Conf -- $111,178 per school
MEAC -- $131,675 per school
Southland -- $131,675
MAC -- $142,648 per school
OVC -- $142,648 per school
Sun Belt -- $142,648 per school
Big Sky -- $142,648 per school

Seven conferences (22%) get 74% of the total NCAA Tourney payout. NINETEEN conferences (60%) only get 14% of the payout. Those conferences are typically one-bid leagues, so the at-large berths (or lack of) really inflict some financial damage.

Seeing that graph, if you're a team like Gonzaga, aren't you kinda pissed that you basically carry the whole weight of your conference and yet you have to share all that money with them?

I'm all for leveling the playing field, but seeing it in practice like this kind of makes me wonder why there isn't a movement to get rid of conferences completely. The haves that carry the conferences are doing all the heavy lifting for the have nots, but still get a similar sized slice of pie. It's kind of bullsh*t.

...

Oh wait then I see this:

"The NCAA recommends conferences distribute the money they receive evenly among their member institutions, but ultimately it's up to the conference to decide. Some follow the NCAA recommendation, some don't."

Gee, I wonder which half the MAC falls on.

What do you mean if you're a team like Gonzaga? Ohio has carried the MAC in the tourney in previous years. I'm not exactly sure what our slice of the conference pie was, though.

What happens to teams that have to vacate their wins, like UNC may have to do or Louisville coming up? Do their portions just get taken away going forward, or is it retroactive?

Haha well, I didn't exactly want to come out and say it, but I think the Gonzaga example holds more weight.

Yeah, I think so too.
