Cross-posted this on the football forum because this scandal appeared to involve multi-sports.

Does anyone know the status of the NCAA investigation of UNC? It was big headlines a few years ago, and now it's hard to even find much information doing an internet search. I suspect that one of our resident gurus, perhaps borna, has his finger on the pulse of this thing and can get us the most recent information. The only stories that I can find are either dated 2014, or just rehashes of old stories. It seemed a very serious infraction when the story first broke, and folks were talking loss of institutional control, death penalty, etc. Is the NCAA sweeping this all under the rug? When I was perusing the Illini board looking for information on the developing Groce story, I saw some posts implying that the NCAA needed to be investigated for its questionable handling of this scandal. Thoughts?

The sanctions will be handed down as soon as UNC fields a team that has no chance at doing damage in the tournament or make a bowl game. Then they will self-penalize by agreeing to not go to a bowl. On the basketball side they will lose a couple of scholarships as soon as they have a couple of kids that will qualify for academic scholarships.

Is that cynical enough for you?

. . . even more cynical: The NCAA found the Tar Heels so guilty that they took scholarships and post-season appearances away from Cleveland St. (paraphrasing The Shark)

"Carolina won two national championships while basketball players were taking fake classes. The Tar Heels also won bowl games in football and ACC championships in other sports. Some or all of those championships could be forfeited." Then the author says it might not go that far. My response, "Why the hell not!" If it does not, the NCAA will lose what little credibility it still has. If a university can get away this kind of nefarious behavior, it and the system which enables the behavior become totally bankrupt.

This is hilarious. If all students had access to bogus classes with bogus grades, then the NCAA can't do anything about athletes getting access to bogus classes with bogus grades.

Oh my!

Oh, my! Lawyer up and threaten to fight the NCAA to the bitter end is now the way to punk this outdated ruling committee into submission. Who is your Daddy now, NCAA?!?! We all knew it anyway, but I guess that money talks and the NCAA walks. So much for amateur athletics. Ouch!

What load of #@$#@$@#$@#^%$^ response by the NCAA. Guess it's time for me to endow a BS Class at OU to ensure they get a BS Degree

If only Rick Pitino knew he could have just offered prostitutes to all students, and not just basketball players....

If the entire school is a sham, you are OK? Goodness.

This is what often happens when institutions are about to implode. This reminds me of the US Soccer Federation. For years soccer fans more knowledgeable than I have been complaining about the structure of the organization, the way they develop players, especially male players and how wrong the entire process has become. Then one day we don't qualify for the World Cup and everyone wonders why and how could this happen? The problems with the NCAA's incompetence are only going to get worse and the scandals we have now will only multiply. When it really begins to hit the fan and implosion is on the horizon, I would hope no one would be surprised.

The next step?

I wonder if this will catch on in other states? Or, even on the federal level?

Maybe federal but I can't see anyone in North Carolina being on board for this.

It seems our very own Dr. David Ridpath has weighed in on the matter. He is frequently quoted when matters like this come up. His quotes appear toward the bottom of the article.
