Seriously.....how has it lasted this long at Western Carolina? Makes no sense. Does he have some dirt on the University President or something?

It has been a tough start for the Catamounts,who have been blown out by both Clemson and Cincinnati respectively. With the exception of the Bobcats deep run into the NCAA tournament under Jim Groce, Larry was part of the Bobcats shocking win of the preseason NIT tournament. He took a chance on Gary Trent, who no one else wanted at that time due to off-court issues. Larry's teams were consistently tough and physical and they often made Bobcat fans proud. Larry is also Southeastern Ohio born and bred, a great guy to boot, and actually played for the Bobcats too. Up until the beginning of this season, Larry had a career record of 689 wins and 434 losses. This included a post-season record of 65 wins and 37 losses. Not bad, if you ask me. The point of all of this is that the Catamounts were nothing when Larry first arrived, but have become consistently more competitive as time passes. He also has an excellent graduation rate, which seems to be a missing positive these days in era of "one and done."

+1 Maddog Western Carolina is a very young, inexperienced team playing a brutal pre-conference schedule to raise money for their athletic department budget. This strategy, mandated by the administration, puts Coach Hunter "behind the 8 ball" with 6 or 8 guaranteed "L's" before they even get to their competitive league.
First class coach, first class person, first class representation for Western Carolina University. That is why he is still there FearLeon.

Hard to produce winning seasons when you are playing money games to fund the department. Let us see how many non-conference wins we'd have over the past 5-6 years if we played that non-league schedule. For that matter, would be be 2-0 with his first two games?

That's a compelling argument, but it does not address his consistent mediocrity in conference play. I suppose they must just have different expectations there, but I shudder to think that we'd happily accept a decade worth of .500ish MAC results here.

I agree^^^^ Zero NCAA appearances in 12 seasons? That won't fly here at all. In fact, if Saul doesn't reach NCAA tourney after 5 seasons, his seat is going to get warm heading into year 6.

Western Carolina has been 50-56 (.471) in the last six seasons in conference. We have been 63-41 (.606) in that same time frame. And your comment pretty much proves my point about how we would feel if we had had Larry's record. That and we ran him out of town with a much better record than what he has had down there.

I know we talked about this yesterday, but who says Saul's seat will be getting warm? While you (and perhaps others on here) might, I'm not sure that Schaus and the powers that be at Ohio University would agree with you on this.

For better or worse, we've also been through four coaches in the time Hunter has been at Western Carolina. We've had some really high ups and a couple of low points. That's far from 12 seasons of mediocrity under one guy.

Maybe Western Carolina has their priorities in the right order. I don't know how much Larry makes, but it's likely much lower than what we're paying our coach. If he graduates his kids and they keep their noses clean, I like the consistency. It's as if he is a professor, which is refreshing.

Well I will say it like this since we're debating about high of highs and a couple low points......would rather take that or take no MAC Championships in that span but be consistently good to get to the finals? Funny how a football argument can get built into this and be spun differently.

Programs pay coaches hundreds of thousands to win. It is not about participation trophies at the division 1 level. The coaches should be good role models and they should recruit ethical players. You don't pay a coach to play a schedule, you pay him to win. Most of us did not have the talent to play D1 ball, that does not make it right to put our low aspirations onto them. I like Larry Hunter, he may not be the guy for Western Carolina.

You have to wonder the toll it is taking on Coach Hunter. Losing is never easy, and it certainly doesn't get any easier the older you get. The Catamounts aren't exactly taking corporate jets a la their big Carolina cousins to road games. Coaching does get in your blood, but it also can take a toll on you.

The report out of Cincinnati was the full court press was on for most of the game

Why coaches “ leave the horses in “ for a game like this is stupid. I️ told Larry to get the UC check; support all the. Other WCU sports but take ONE DOLLAR for himself; get 100 pennies and tell that 5’ 9” P****k of a coach to put his 100 pennies where the sun doesn’t shine

Larry laughed but class and cream always come to the top of the cup
