This is all on ESPN for making this guy a cult of personality. A couple of days ago the first seven stories on the college basketball page were about him. And the more outrageous he acts the more they reward him. And the tournament organizers are thrilled by it because it brings people into the building which is how they make their money. Adidas completely stepped over the line by replacing the ref though and they are rightly so catching a ton of flak over it.

This. ESPN wouldn't be continually feeding the beast so to speak if they were not benefiting from it somehow. While IMHO he is definitely imbalanced in several ways a part of me thinks he cranks it up when he knows there is an audience/camera rolling.

I've seen numerous talking heads suggest that AAU should impose a ban on him. The problem is that people misunderstand what AAU is. His team doesn't play in many (if any) AAU sanctioned events. People call all competitive youth basketball AAU basketball but the vast majority of events are not actually AAU events. This past event was sanctioned by Adidas and not AAU. There are a huge number of organizations that put on these tournaments (Big Shots, Hoop Group, Force One, Adidas, Nike, YBOA, AYBA, et al) and some of those aren't even really put on by those groups but by a local representative. There is no real structure for the travel teams. Teams will sign up for National events and qualifiers for those events but most are just one-off tournaments where each team hopes to find teams that are competitive. The rules vary wildly, particularly the age requirements, from tournament to tournament. To make a long story short, if he gets banned by one organization he'll just sign his teams up for a tournament sponsored by someone else. There are ten to twelve such tournaments in the DC area every weekend. I'm sure it's the same in LA.

But as has been mentioned before, even with his attitude, he is a godsend for these tournament organizers. They make their money by charging people to attend. A typical cost is $15/day or $25/weekend but they generally draw just parents. They are turning people away anywhere his team plays right now. Of course, lost in all this is the fact that he's a horrible coach.

LiAngelo Ball arrested in China for shoplifting in the team's hotel. They are over there for a season opening game against Georgia Tech. For the first time ever "Lavar Ball could not be reached for comment."


So the real question is does UCLA cut bait on him now since LaMelo is no longer eligible to play college ball?

According to news report I read,depending on the value of the merchandise they

Lavar had scheduled a news conference for this morning but apparently someone got to him and wisely told him to cancel it. He did issue this statement:

“I’m going to wait until I get more intel on what’s going on. He’ll be fine. Everyone’s making it a big deal. It ain’t that big a deal.”

I beg to differ.

And while his son was still detained he went on a sightseeing tour of Shanghai with his reality show crew. The UCLA basketball team went to the Shanghai Disneyland.

Not surprised someone advised him not to speak...but I am shocked that he listened.

Nice.

Will be interesting to see how the local courts and constubalary treat this. Make an example of them or extend a diplomatic olive branch. Got a feeling an ordinary US Citizen would be in steep doo doo

According to the news this morning,the players were arrested for stealing sun glasses from a Louis Vuitton store.

They have been released on bail and are currently under "hotel arrest".

They said on the news that,just the fact they were released on bail,shows that the Chinese want to try and keep this as "low key" as they can.
