If it was (and not a hold over from JC), then kudos to SP as while he looked like he was deadweight early on, his development and style of game is much appreciated. SP needs to go back to this periodically as this isn't your prototypical Saul-Ball style player and it's nice to see an occasional wing on your squad that 1) can create their own shot; 2) can matchup with the oppositions athleticism; 3) doesn't look like fish out of water going to the basket.
I'm confused on "dead weight"? He played nearly 20 minutes a game as a freshman. As a sophomore, while it might have seemed like he regressed, its worth noting that he faced more competition for PT than he did as a freshman with the arrivals of Simmons, Dartis, Block and Gollon.
Agree. Never ever thought of him as dead weight. He was pretty raw when he came in ... especially his shot. But he's always had the ability to get to the rim and play really strong defense.
Just so happens, other guys progressed faster than him ... so he fell down the depth chart.
I agree ... he got an opportunity with some injuries the last few years ... obviously worked his ass off on his shot ... and has really blossomed into something special.
If he continues to put up around 20 ppg ... you're looking at All-MAC 1st teamer.
I was NOT expecting an Ohio win yesterday. I greatly mis-evaluated WKU. Having not seen them in person, I just thought if they beat Purdue and hung with Villanova ... this team must be talented.
That was a band of misfit, reject D1 jokesters. There might be talent in there ... but man, were they ever disjointed. Just "ole" defense all day ... made it easy for Ohio on offense to get good looks.
I give Ohio a ton of credit ... no Dartis, no problem. That was a gut-check win they needed to build a little confidence going into the MAC season.
After seeing that ... if Dartis can get healthy for Marshall ... that should be one helluva track meet on Saturday in Huntington. Take the over!
Realistically ... if Ohio can play like that in MAC play, they should challenge for a top four seed no problem. But if we see what we saw at Maryland ... yikes! This team will struggle to finish 9-9 in the league.
Saturday gave me a little hope this team can be dangerous ... which is all I was looking forward before that massive showdown with NW Ohio in late December ;-)
