Yeah, not sure about that. The men’s coach and football coach would be so isolated from this situation and have been very successful, not seeing this.

Really? Have you read the Outside the Lines report? This has nothing to do with the gymnastics fiasco.

The football and basketball programs are the least of Michigan State's worries right now. After the despicable events at Penn State took place, most seemed to think it could never happen again at another university. The disgusting abuse and cover up that took place wasn't limited to the gymnastics program, other examples of abuse and cover up took place outside of the gymnastics program. It seems prominent football and basketball players weren't charged with crimes and reports seemed to have mysteriously disappeared. It is now only beginning to be uncovered. The university president and AD are gone and I think Michigan State's problems are only beginning to surface--and rightly so.

Agreed. Until there's a direct link, there's nothing in this. When there is, then I'd agree.

No, I have not kept up on the happenings with MSU, so I committed without looking into it. Hmmmm

Andrew and OU Country not sure if you are are aware of these stories, otherwise I am guessing you wouldn't say this was an overreach. Look what happened at Baylor. Sometimes a culture exists at a university where events are seemingly swept under the rug, until it blows up in their face.

Coaches turning a blind eye and possibly covering up a gang rape?? Huh??? Like I said, not going to end well for Izzo and Dantonio.

I'm gonna to be purposely a little vague here just to protect my sources, but I have known for a long time that something was not right at Michigan State in terms of its cultural as it relates to issues of sexuality, broadly defined. My knowledge of this goes back to the previous century when some doctor friends of mine attended a Continuing Medical Education (CME) seminar at MSU. They left halfway through one session saying that the presenter had used photos in his presentation that contained "unnecessary nudity." Now, you know that when several doctors are offended by "unnecessary nudity" during a medical presentation that something is very wrong. They see nudity every day in their practices. They are not a bunch of prudes. I know some detail about these photos, but I won't go into them here because this is a family channel and also because of issue of confidentiality. After this recent news broke one of the doctors who walked out on that presentation years ago said to me, "This, I fear, is just the tip of the iceberg at MSU." I fear that he is right in that assessment.

Cool! Zanesville boy comes to Athens to replace Frank the Legend. Now that would be a plan I like!

I don’t know- MSU’s President and AD have already resigned and they are bigger fish than either Dantonio or Izzo are (at least in theory or where administration hierarchy is concerned), so it would not be shocking to see either one or both of them resign.

We don't know what the final result would be, whether it would be a resignation of firing from the new AD or President, not to mention a NCAA Show Cause Penalty. We are only at the tip of the iceberg in what might come out. Who knows what the toxicity of this case might be, it may be such that he can't come back to coaching or it might be worse for Coach Izzo? It all remains to be see, but it could get very ugly. It took a while for the Penn State and Baylor situation to come into focus, I suspect it will be the same here.

I will say this: the reason the two coaches are even remotely linked is because MSU has a good ole boy network up there (shocker). Hollis and Izzo go back a ways from their days working around Judd Heathcoate and when it came time to hire Izzo it was no question. As to Dantonio and Izzo, those two were roomies back in the day and when it came time to hire a coach in 2006, it was a done deal between them all to get Dantonio back. So I go back to this case and go there is a serious problem within MSU when it comes to sexual assaults and other allegations. It was one of those things you knew the MSU kids were sketchy, ranging from Appling (in jail now and has this to deal with) to Mateen Cleaves and a night in a hotel in Flint (crazy to think it happened down the road from where I was at).......Nonetheless, if anyone should be getting targeted is the Ingham Co. District Attorneys and Investigators. The fact that this went on with numerous complaints across athletics is cringing. Usually means the DA or Prosecuting Attorney made sure MSU wasn't in the wrong.

But yes, based on the culture built at MSU, Izzo and Dantonio will be in hot water. I think Izzo will get canned, but Dantonio survives because of his paper trail he left on every case. I had been tipped off to this case when it initially was a rumor back in 2016 that it was going to blow up to this point (and trust me it hasn't reached it's potential). I was told it went all the way up then and people's heads will roll with a couple closed door meetings. Usually helps when you got a couple friends telling you crisis management is beginning to happen.

Now that I say that, if I am any district attorney or county prosecutor in a college county, I am going through every complaint filed or whatever that involved athletes. Because if I recall my old stories around here, wasn't Larry Hunter's brother one of the attorneys in Athens? I say that because I have heard enough stories from the hey-day about guys getting off on numerous crimes.

Larry's brother Garry was the city attorney. Had virtually nothing to do with the prosecutor's office.

Apologies. At any rate though, you're going to be looking into those situations a lot harder moving forward.

It seems Ohio Cat Fan and Buckeye to Bobcat hit the nail on the head about a dysfunctional and toxic culture they have gleaned through sources. Now the Michigan State Attorney General and the Feds are getting involved, noted alums like Magic Johnson are speaking their mind etc. This Detroit News article which came out a few days ago is perhaps the tip of the iceberg. There will certainly be more revelations to come other than the ones featured in this article and from the ESPN OTL presentation. It could get ugly, not only for Michigan State athletics, but the university in general and even any elected officials who knew about these accusations.

Garry Hunter was the Athens City Law Director. As such, he would have overseen all prosecutions in Athens County Municipal Court as well as representing the city in any civil matters. Felony cases end up being transferred to Common Pleas Court which has its own prosecutor separate from the Municipal Court.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of the county-level prosecutors, and I didn't realize that he supervised municipal court prosectors. I remember the he was often in the news offering various legal opinions to various level of city government.
