Use technology to engage with mobile devices during the game. It's a cheap add on to the Wi-Fi Network that already exists. You can push messages to students during the game and create interaction via an App that could be developed by the students. It's happening now in large public venues and entertainment districts.
No personal criticism here but that comment shines the light on a very sad state of affairs - that what's happening on the court - a contest between two competing teams - isn't enough to 1) get people's attention and/or 2) get them to the games. Unlike a previous poster, I don't believer we're anywhere near the bottom yet. Just like schools pushing reading down to lower and lower grades, technology is finding it's way into younger and younger hands. The earlier you start, the more addicted you often become.

Technology isn't going away.

Embrace it or get runover.

The pace of innovation is accelerating. Smart phones have been around for basically 10 years. 10! And they've reshaped everything.

Virtual reality in 10 years might mean you could put on a headset and "feel" like you are live inside the Convo with someone "standing" next to you.

It's really hard to envision where we're headed but I'm very, very certain it's only going to get more absurd from here.

My point exactly hence my comment that I don't think we are anywhere near peaking in terms of technology use and the effect it appears to be having on attendance and in person engagement.

I think you hit it dead on. Was more disagreeing with previous posters.

Ohio Athletics (and the university as a whole really) needs to be proactive about technology but in their minds that means investing in a scoreboard or creating some generic "app" that no one would use. The "hanging scoreboard" is playing catch-up rather than doing something new and innovative that'll cater to students today. I don't think waiting for students to stop using technology is a realistic approach but I also don't think it's realistic to expect 20 year olds to stop acting like 20 year olds which seems to be the mindset of our marketing to students.

Bingo! Whether it's colleges or businesses, which some will argue colleges are, the organizations that are hitting home runs are the ones who are loaded with beyond forward thinking marketing folks. Visit the marketing offices of many businesses today and what you see are a bunch of folks who all look the same. There just aren't many Don Drapers out there. Now that's over simplistic but to your point, you can't be playing catch up all the time. By the time we get a scoreboard, the other folks will already be on to the next greatest thing.

I think its saturation in entertainment options more than anything else. My parents are seniors and they are watching House of Cards on Netflix streaming service. Two points here, one is this new technology thing isn't just for hip young people anymore. Second the quality and on demand nature of TV shows has advanced to the point where it makes a lot more sense to sit in front of your 55" 4k TV and download a show than to even hit the movies. Going to the movies has become inconvenient. As it relates to basketball games, with the parking policy around the Convo requiring a donation that is making it inconvenient to the casual fan. Constantly milking season ticket holders for parking spots I believe has reached its saturation point as well.

Funny, and on the football side we claim the lack of interest is the violence, while on the basketball side it’s a simple love of technology.

Wait, wait, wait. Are we saying the "pick your jam/text your vote" promotion we run during basketball games isn't innovative or unique? Are you telling me sports venues have been doing this for 15 years already? Are you also telling me the terrible video boards we have are so pixely that we can barely read the options of songs to choose from?

I really think once this new scoreboard gets installed it's gonna make the Convo feel a lot different. You can do a lot more with that type of scoreboard, marketing wise, also. Whether or not that puts more students in their section, who knows.

Agreed - you can do a lot with it. The question is, will they actually take advantage of everything it's capable of? If it were me, I'd be sending a team of people to other arena's that really take advantage of it and learn what they do, and how they do it. For example, UC really, really used theirs well when I was in Fifth Third Arena/Shoemaker Center. Same applied at Hinkle when I was there for a game.

Yeah that's definitely going to be a big question.
