As a current comparison, since the "new" Big East was formed, Villanova has beaten Xavier by 23 points in games played head to head in Philly. I don't think we characterize X as a bad basketball team, or as having a bad coach (even if I don't like him).
https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/status/951427723066597376I didn't classify Ohio as a "bad basketball" team ... nor would I.
I was just pointing some of the inconsistencies with the program the last 4 years.
Ohio has four 20+ point losses ... only one less than Miami (which, I believe, we would all classify as a bad basketball program). Ohio is closer to Miami in terms of this stat than Akron/Buffalo, the two flagship programs the last four years. I think a lot of us would like to consider Ohio part of that group, especially considering the money Ohio spends. Akron and Buffalo have COMBINED for only three 20+ point losses during that same time span.
***I'm reluctant to put WMU in that category because they've been really up-and-down as a program the last four years. Ball State was more surprising that they've seen such blowouts.
And with Ohio's four 20+ point losses ... they also have four such wins. In comparison, Akron and Buffalo have nine (UB 6, Akron 3) ... Toledo stunningly has seven 20+ point wins to go with only two 20+ point losses.
Again ... not saying Ohio is a bad program. But it's been all over the place with 20 point wins ... 20 point losses .... MAC wins on the road ... MAC losses at home. I would just think that four years in, there would be a little more consistency and a solid foundation laid with Saul. I know injuries have derailed most of those plans. But I would think a solid foundation in place would be enough that a 20+ point blowout against a team like CMU would be happening anymore ... no matter who is injured.
And as far as Xavier/Villanova is concerned. Villanova OWNS them! 9-1 since they joined the Big East. (Full disclosure ... I'm a huge 'Nova fan ... my dad is an alum ... so I've been a Wildcat for life) And no, I wouldn't say Xavier is a bad team because 'Nova has destroyed them consistently. I'd just say 'Nova has their number.
Ohio's losses have come to CMU (x2), EMU, and Buffalo ... a little bit different than Villanova.
