I thought I heard either Russ or Marty commenting on a recent broadcast that Gollon will need an additional surgery this off-season. If so he’s yet another to add to our MASH unit of a season. Could a case be made that Saul actually has done his best coaching job here keeping this ship from completely sinking considering all the red-shirts and those key players that are simply heroically gutting out this season playing with significant injuries?

I don't believe, as some do here, that Saul's recruits are sub par. You just don't lose the MAC POY one year, and the conference's best emerging sophomore the next year, and not have it drastically effect the Win-Loss record. And, this year it wasn't just one big loss (Carter), it was a series of nagging injuries to about half the team at one time or another.

Go OHIO!

Saul mentioned it in the post game press conference as well. James joked that he's felt so good and been playing so well that he might not even need the surgery, but Saul said something like "lets let the doctors determine that."

We have some recruits on the bench who do not appear to be D-1 caliber players. We are also SLOW...not a good combo when your coach eschews zone defense in any form. From what I have heard and read about our incoming Big (6'10"), he is an Ethan Jacobs wannabe. That's not a knock on Ethan, BTW.

Ethan ended up having a pretty nice career after he left Ohio, so I'm okay if that's the case.

I would agree with that Country. He ended up making an immediate impact and had a good career at Colgate and continues to make money overseas. https://www.facebook.com/337725922918464/videos/182673523...

I thought he was still playing overseas, but I couldn't find a link to show his team, stats, etc.

Last I checked we don't play in the Patriot League.

As a counter, I'd offer that the top 2-3 teams in that league aren't that different than the top 3-4 of the MAC.

He did, but he had that career in a conference that is not known for great speed and athleticism. The kid had skills, but also limitations. In the end, it all worked out for him, which is great!

I remember thinking watching KVK during his freshman year that wow this kid looks beyond clumsy and not the most athletic specimen we ever recruited. By his jr. and sr. seasons he sure showed how incredibly misguided my initial judgments were. I also remember post after post after post of previous regimes that we couldn’t recruit legit bigs when they weren’t immediate phenoms the minute they stepped on the court as freshmen.

This should be a lesson to some of our BA experts who have declared that Saul doesn't know how to recruit. But, it's not likely they'll ever question their ability to assess talent. Us BA coaches would recruit like Coach K and have results like Johnny Wooden.

I think I get what you're saying, but Saul had nothing to do with KVK and we don't have a good case of Saul recruiting somebody who looked unathletic and then proved otherwise (though I don't recall the immediate thoughts on Jason Carter). The players Saul recruited that didn't look all that ready for the big time have often proven to be right, Dozier of course being the obvious case. Hopefully last year's forwards (Vander Plas and Gareri) don't follow in those footsteps.

I did not imply Saul had anything to do with KVK. My point was that we have had very few “big men” come into our program under the last few regimes before Saul and had said “big men” become the second coming of Kentuckyesque one and doners. With few exceptions most have taken a year or two to develop and become contributors. IF this 6’10” kid Saul has coming in takes a year or two as well it would not be out of the norm.
