BtoB: Good history lesson.
I might only add that while, with one notorious exception, OHIO's lads all answered the call to defend the Union, Miami was full of Southern sympathizers and had nearly as many students and graduates don the uniform of secession as enlist in one of the various Ohio Union regiments. In the gubernatorial election of 1863, Butler County cast its ignoble votes for Clement Vallandigham, notorious Peace Democrat (aka Copperhead), rather than OHIO alumnus John Brough, War Democrat, who also had the Republican nomination, and was running on a fusion ticket. Brough won overwhelmingly statewide, and prompted Abraham Lincoln upon learning of the victory to wire Brough: “Glory to God in the Highest. Ohio has saved the Nation.” And, since Brough was an OHIO alumnus, we might add that OHIO had saved the nation. Miami was shameful then and is shameful now. OHIO was glorious then and is glorious now. Case closed. To summarize the case in strictly academic legal terms, "Miami sucks!"
