There's been a lot of talk here (and deservedly so) for TK's performance this year. Not so much for the women's Cierra Hooks, who is having a fabulous freshman season, also. Last night, in a 1 point win over KSU, Hooks had a line of 21 pts/9 steals/8 assists, and I believe is now the single season steals record holder for women's basketball. She's leading the team in scoring, and also averaging nearly 4 steals per game. Who else in the MAC will challenge these two for top freshman honors? Nike Sabande at Miami on the Mens's side? Justin Turner at BGSU? Courtnie Lewis on the Women's side at EMU?

The PG spot on both sides at Ohio looks very promising for the next several years.

I'm worried that TK's small assist numbers and high turnovers might sway voters another way, but it would very cool to see both of them get it for Ohio.

The only other players I see in the argument are Sibande from Miami, or Turner at BG. Neither of them surpass him in raw numbers. Do they in importance on the court to the team? I don't know.

They'll both have better conference W/L records most likely, which often sways voters a lot.

If Michael Weathers was able to win the award last year, Teyvion should be able to easily win this year. Weathers won it on a crappy team and he was asked to do it all for them. Teyvion is on a crappy team and while not being asked to do it all, he has stepped up in a way that Weathers never did. He is clutch, he has been unflappable and has been as consistent as anyone in the league in terms of his scoring. He has had double-doubles and let's not even think about the pressure on him following Jaaron. What a situation to be put into. We just lost someone who is arguably one of the better players we've had in the past 20 years and Teyvion has all but made us forget Simmons. I still think Jason should have gotten it last year based on his impact with Tone out but his numbers were low due to not playing a ton early in the year. Teyvion has led us since Day 1. It will be a tragedy if he doesn't get it.

Love to see Kirk get the award. He's kept us competitive this year. And Hooks is a lock. She is so talented that, conceivably, she could get a quadruple double before she graduates.

Nobody more important to their team in my opinion out of that group. Especially with our short bench. I cannot imagine this season without TK - he's played so many valuable minutes for Ohio. I'd say we'd be about 4-23 without him. Prarie View AMU, MSM, Coppin St, Capital. That's all IMO, we would have lost the rest, and likely 0-fer in the MAC. He's fearless, getting better all the time, and I love that he's on OUr side. I sure hope he is Freshman of the Year for the MAC, it would be well deserved.

Hooks is amazing to watch, especially as a defender. You know exactly what she's going to do to you to try to get the ball - but apparently you still can't stop it. She pokes the ball out, and gets a run-out basket. Clockwork. Like the above poster said, we've got two good PGs to root for at Ohio for the next few years.

Yes, Hooks has the single season steals record.

And, FWIW... She's only 102 PTS away from tying Caroline Mast's single season points record by a freshman... Mast had 488, Cece has 386.

I'd be shocked if Cece doesn't get the award.

488 points in only 28 games as a freshman was pretty amazing. After that she scored over 635 points each year playing 27, 28 and 29 games.

FWIW, Hooks went down early in the Miami game with a foot/ankle injury and did not return. As indicated by the final score, she is essential to the success of the Bobcats. I've yet to hear how serious the injury is.

The entire arena seemed deflated when Hooks went down early. The ladies quickly fought back out of a hole to get within 2, but that was the only run they had. It was all Miami after. Hopefully she can be rested (if needed/possible) for the Akron game and potentially the first round home game, which will likely again be Akron.
