Watched Mt. Saint Mary's last night. They have two very athletic guys in the paint. They can get those type of players and we can't? Something doesn't add up. I feel like, even at full strength, that team would have blown us out of the building.

Yes the Bobcats made Cleveland with a five seed. I would not call that decent. Don’t you expect more from Boals than a five or third seed every season? The man is being paid way better than a “decent five seed.” His non conference record was very mediocre. The fans should expect more than a decent five seed.

In my 20+ years of fandom, we’ve been as high as second twice, I believe. So, yeah, 3-5 is generally what I expect.

Not sure why I can’t get this point across. If I shoot three from I get nine points. In order to do that inside the three point line, I would have to get five baskets out of ten shots. I simply think more teams shoot better than 33% from outside the arc than shoot 50% from inside the arc.
But not all 2pt shots are created equal. You're missing the math. I went back and compiled full season stats for the MAC this year based on shot type using Torvik's stats. I figured it was the most applicable to us/this discussion and I didn't have time to do it for the full NCAA. This is all 12 teams combined for this year.

Dunks: 522-616 .847. Pts/shot = 1.695
Close 2s: 5017-8630 .581. Pts/shot = 1.163
Far 2s: 1696-4454 .381. Pts/shot = 0.762
FT: 5143-7046 .730. Pts/poss = 1.361*
3pt: 2820-8401 .336. Pts/shot = 1.007

*note: I assumed 50% were 2 shot attempts and 50% were 1-and-1s bc this data wasn't readily available. The actual value will scale proportion to the # of 2 shot trips, but the final value will still end up above close 2s and behind dunks.

For you to purposely take away a 3 and instead give them a close 2, the team would need to be shooting above 39% from 3 given a normal 58% from close 2.

Zero teams in the MAC shot 39% or above from 3. The highest was Miami at 38.3%. Next was Akron at 36.6%. Of course both were good shooting teams so they actually shot 60.5% and 61.8% from close 2s, higher than the 58% league average. So close 2s were still worth more per shot than 3s even for them.

If you add all 2 pt shots together you get
2pt: 7235-13700 .528. Pts/shot = 1.056
3pt: 2820-8401 .336. Pts/shot = 1.007

How in the world did we beat Robert Morris by 16?

If you are satisfied with a 3-5 seed yearly from the highest paid coach in the league, then maybe you can buy the beachfront property in Coolville that is going cheap. The Bobcat head coach is compensated to finish better than a 3/5 seed yearly.

He can finish 437th in the regular season every year for all I care. He's paid to win in March. He didn't this year. That's not good enough.

Is he? Or did he get paid for that NCAA win?

Graff thanks for the analysis. I guess, those are the numbers. All I know is this. How many times do you see the weak side defender with a foot in the lane leaving a wide open guy at the 3 point line. Ball is reversed and defender does not get out in time to guard. Often times that offside defender is the third guy defending the lane. My point is you don’t need more than two people in the lane defending.

Keep Coolville outta this.

I’m really curious to see what we can get out of Kuany. I want to believe that he can be an impact player with his length and athleticism. But, I also don’t remember the last time we redshirted a player and he ended up being a surprising contributor.

I have a friend who refers to the area of eastern Athens County where you find the Village of Coolville, the hamlet of Frost and the hamlet of Torch as the "Temperature Triangle."

“Keep Coolville out of this.” Are others keeping “the dog” or TOS out of this? If you want to reward the mens hoop coach for the one season he got to the big dance during a Covid season that is ok. However his constant finishes of a 3/5 seed doesn’t measure up with his salary. If the administration is going to pay him the highest salary in the league, then they should expect more than a five seed yearly. It could be that fans and the administration are ok with these five seed performances? The administration was not being fiscally responsible when they awarded the mens coach with the highest salary in the league. And for those who think he is paid to only win in March, then he has won a three game tournament once in six seasons in March. If all that matters is only a few games in March, then schedule 50-75% of non league games vs power four programs and bring in some cash for the university. Won’t do that because it will hurt the record.

This isn't football. P5 schools barely play ANY non con road games. They surely aren't clamoring to come to Athens in December. And there wouldn't be any $$ windfall by doing so anyway.

You play those games to be resume and experience builders for March.

Don’t come at my home. It’s a lovely place that molded me into the keyboard warrior I am now. Go after Nelsonville.

Is there anything we won’t respond to that way? Like, does a waiter try to take his order, only to get a screed against Boals’ salary and beachfront property in greater Athens County?

Six years ago Kentucky basketball paid 90 K to schools for coming to Lexington. No doubt that amount has increased in six years. That is just one example. Play five of those games on the road and make over 500k. Of course that isn’t the 1.1 mill that Rutgers is paying football but do that for a couple of seasons and it is the same amount.
