Pav’s game is so much more complementary to Elliott’s style of play. The puzzle pieces just seem to fit better.

Thoroughly enjoyable beatdown.

Clayton has taken a lot of heat this year. This was the best game all year out of him in terms of aggression and being physical. Hats off to #23.

And you pay E2 what he needs to keep him in Athens for another year. The leap he will make from year one to year two is going to be fantastic.
I've been hard on AJC some in his career but tonight is exactly what we need out of him. He was a force inside and out. Pav, E2 and AJB are dogs. To me, the one who played a quietly great game was EJ. 7 pts, good defense and big time boards. (3 ast as well) So thankful he came back after his personal issue.

Super solid game by Elmore James. Crashing the boards, bodying up, sinking shots.

My only disappointment tonight was AJB taking two wild threes, off balance, out of rhythm--unlike him. But after that, he was all business too!

Pav put on a Jay Burson impression for a few minutes of the 2nd half!

Who posted the following from the game thread of the first Akron game in January?

"We are beating this team (Akron) in Athens. Carve it in marble."

Then, who said this in a reply from same game thread?

"I'm with you on this!!!! Play poorly and stayed hanging around."
Thanks that was me. And I said it last year too

Great game. Way fun. Just dominated them. Not even close buuuuuud.

There was some serious taking on court. Intense.

Pav is just a baller. Clayton seems to be figuring out how to play injured. Balanced scoring. Intense D.

Fun night in the Convo.

Let’s keep this roll going….

A couple of nuggets on the announcers who I thought really did a good job with info that I was not aware of.

1.) Clayton has Planter Fasciitis. Obviously, we know he’s playing through an injury. But I never heard any local reporter or Boals give specific information as to what the injury is.

2.) If I heard them correctly, Clayton really doesn’t practice and wasn’t participating in the shoot around today..

That is the first I heard of an official diagnosis and was unaware of the practice situation.

I'll be at this one, looks like we'll have a nice crowd based on the marketing emails I've gotten. Saying the lower bowl is sold out, which is a good sign. Let's make some shots early and get the crowd going from the tip.
it will be a nice crowd based on the lower standards for attendance. This is the type of game that should 8-10k on a Saturday, but will probably be 5-6.

I do see that the lower bowl is sold out (which is a good sign, but that's only 3k seats), but tons and tons of seats are still available above the concourse. Hopefully a good student and walkup turnout will boost it.

Either way, I hope it's loud.
I'm there, section 109. There will be cursing. Make noise, people.
Reported attendance 6,740. Looked close to that to me. Biggest MAC team home game attendance attendance this year?

In true Groce fashion, they go deep into the bench with nine guys averaging more than 15 minutes per game. Ten if you count Josiah Harris who has been injured since early in the season. All of those guys average at least 5ppg, led by the Johnson & Johnson backcourt (hello NIL opportunity).

Team stats:

1st in MAC in offensive ppg
4th in MAC in defensive ppg
1st in scoring margin (by quite a bit)
2nd in 3pt shooting
1st in defensive 3pt shooting (not good for Ohio)
8th in total free throws (surprisingly don't get to the line that much, read into that what you will)
1st in rebounding, but 10th in opponent rebounding
8th in TO margin
1st in Assist/TO ratio
So you're tellin me theres a chance...

I think we win. Have always thought we split Akron. Throw out the stats on this one. Gonna be a battle.

I was wrong.

Wasn’t a battle at all.

Nice improvement, congrats. Back in the mid 70's it was not uncommon to see 10,000 plus for the big games and 7500 was fairly normal.

As someone who has run for 4 decades, plantar fasciitis, is a bitch. I quit running 6 months even doing PT and at-home therapy.

I really think there's an inverse relationship between how well we play and how many posts are on this board. Interesting. If we had lost badly, there'd likely be 150 posts on here.

You definitely heard them correctly. They said he doesn’t practice at all, and just operates on the honor system with Boals on game nights, telling him if he can go or not.

Great win! Dominated the majority of the game. Love seeing Pavs take his game to another level during last few games. If they can continue to build off of their recent performances, this *could* be a scary team in Cleveland but it’s too early to say that yet. Also, props to Clayton for continuing to battle and gut through his current situation. That was an impressive performance by him and the entire team last night.

Does anybody know when they went to scanning tickets? The reported attendance number now always seems to be much closer at actual butts in seats. I would assume it's a lot easier now to click a button and get a number of those who came through the door and scanned, plus adding in a set number for staff/cheerleaders/etc. In the past was it just easier to report sold due to only having that data available?

Either way, a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening!

Plantar F. will humble the best athletes. It's the foundation of the body. Walking is very difficult, running is next to impossible.
Anyone notice Reef is always benched to cool off after he commits a foul?

Just watching in the tube, I thought our defense was very intense. Lots of pressure-9 steals and 14 turnovers back that up. I don’t know if we have the energy to play that way for 3 games in Cleveland but if we could we could win the whole thing.

I think there are multiple factors here. yes, message boards are a good outlet for frustration during a loss... but we win a lot more at home and a lot of the folks on this board are more likely to be at a home game rather than watching the streams and simultaneously venting.

Well thought out blog recap here by an Akron basketball fan concerning last night's game:

https://akronzippedup.substack.com/p/zips-mens-basketball...

Here is a sample from the blog:

Jackson Paveletzke had a field day driving the ball inside, taking Akron guards inside 10 feet all night long and finishing with success. He was the best player on the floor and finished the night with 21 points. Vic Searls gave Akron bigs a lot of fits early, too. AJ Clayton, known for disappearing in big games, even scored 18 points and grabbed 8 boards just 8 days after being benched in the last 10 minutes in a loss at Kent.

QFT.

Biggest win of the year and we've had 20 posts in 16 hours.

Let me make it 21!

Great game with high-level intensity by OHIO the whole game. If we would've play more games with that level of intensity, we'd have a better W-L record.

Pav is really coming into his own. Mitchel seems like he's been steadily improving since he came back after his injury. AJC looked more like his old self tonight. Double EE is starting to play like a veteran at the end of his freshman year. All the cylinders were firing in the proper sequence last night and the Bobcat car just rolled over the Zips. IF we can kept it up, we could dancing in March. Go OHIO!

I've not seen Akron play this year but I couldn't figure out what they were trying to do on offense. That may have to do with the fact that our defensive top often was only 10 or 15 feet from half court. That may have been the best defensive scheme I've seen in some time. Of course even if you have a good scheme, the players have to execute it.

First, I agree with DFC to the point of posting after road games vs home. I am much more likely to post quickly after a road game when the thoughts are fresh. Even if I drive straight home I am less likely to post because things just fade. Also, if we do post more after a loss it is likely related to the negative posts prompting a lot of replies and discussion. People are more likely to chime in on that then they are "wow we were great."

Also I agree there was a clear shift to reporting actual attendance a few years ago. It definitely used to be inflated. 7k sounds about right.

But anyway, wow we were great and what a great day in Athens. What being a sports fan is all about when you see your time fire on all cylinders (and maybe turn a corner?). JP was fantastic going downhill all game and avoiding mistakes. That is our game, no doubt about it as Reef/EE/Elmore are similar style. When we got up huge and deliberately tried to chew shot clock we struggled. Attacking the rim with reckless abandon should be our #1 strategy.

As others said, that is the player we need Clayton to be. Shoot/make some threes but get in there and mix it up and have a nose for the rebounds. I was shocked to see we ended up outrebounded. I thought we did a great job positioning and securing boards.

And that defense needs to stick around. It was absolutely NOT just an off night for Akron, the guys deserve a lot of credit for the way they defended. Many times they just kept running into closed doors and had to force bad shots.

Anyone else notice no starter played more than 22 minutes for Akron? The bench actually played more minutes than the starters. Nate Johnson (leadng scorer) had 4 points and Isiah Gray (3rd leading scorer was skunked with 0. Unreal. Groce packed it in when we went up about 25 with 15 to go. They barely pressed at all. I understand the thinking but maybe a little surprising. No ill will towards Groce & Dustin...but it still mkaes me happy when they have bad days in Athens.

I don't know if trap is the right word but quite the throwaway road trip to Kalamazoo in between our 2 biggest home games of the year. Guys needs to stay focused on that mission and get the job done. If they do we've got a great shot at the 2/3 seed, only further embarrassing those that expressed concern about making it to Cleveland.
