Did a little bit more digging on the current state of the transfer portal and the contact and follows being made by the coaching staff. Throughout the year, I’ve seen plenty of articles outlining changes that were going to be implemented to the transfer portal starting this offseason. What were these changes?
LATER PORTAL WINDOW:
In 2025, the D1 transfer portal opened the Monday after the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. In 2026, the portal does not open until the Tuesday after the National Championship game, a full two weeks later. This means that guys like Ayden Evans, Elijah Elliott, and Jordan Fisher aren’t yet officially in the portal; they’ve just announced their “intent” to enter. Because they aren’t in the portal, coaches aren’t allowed to make them formal offers yet, just like how our coaching staff isn’t allowed to directly contact players just because they’ve announced their intent to go portaling. The “follow on social media” thing we see and track is a loophole to this. Coaches can follow players, but they aren’t allowed to contact them in any way outside of that until the portal actually opens.
SHORTER PORTAL WINDOW:
In 2024, the portal stayed open for 45 days. In 2025, it was 30 days. In 2026, there are only 15 days for players to enter the portal after it opens.
FIRED COACHES:
Previously, if a team were to not make the MAC tournament and the coach got fired, players could enter the portal immediately. If that happened pre-conference tournament in 2025, any player on that team could enter the portal before it opened for everyone else after the first week of the NCAAT. In 2026, this was changed so those players now have to wait to enter the portal with everyone else in D1. There is no more early entry.
-----------------------------------------
If it feels like things are moving slower this year with the recruiting process, it’s because they are, and it’s because of these new rules. So why the D2 and NAIA contacts? It’s because NCAA D2 and D3 have completely different transfer rules, and NAIA is separate altogether. I would break the current transfer portal landscape into the following three groups:
- NCAA D1:
Nobody, even those whose coaches were fired post-Jan. 1, can officially enter the portal and be recruited until April 7th. Players can announce their “intent” to transfer, and other coaches can follow them on social media, but no actual recruiting can happen until that date. Are there coaches breaking those rules? Definitely, but that’s a conversation for another day.
- NCAA D2/D3:
As far as I can find, there is no restricted transfer portal window for NCAA D2/D3. This means players in the lower NCAA divisions can enter their names into the transfer portal whenever they want. The only real restriction is that to play for another NCAA program, they do have to officially enter their name into the portal. A D2 guy could quit on his team in the middle of January, and D1 coaches could start recruiting him. That example is likely extreme, but there aren’t nearly the same rules for these players that there are for players on D1 rosters.
- JUCO/NAIA:
These two aren’t governed by the NCAA, and there isn’t really an official transfer portal for them to enter. NAIA guys can request a “Permission to Contact” letter from their AD at any time, and D1 coaches can then openly recruit them. JUCO guys have even less restriction of movement. They can’t transfer and play mid-year, but outside of that, they can largely be recruited at any time with little to no restrictions.
-----------------------------------------
So where do we stand today (March 30th)? The only players the coaching staff can actively reach out to and recruit are those who are either NCAA D2, NCAA D3, NAIA, or JUCO. Until April 7th, it will likely continue to be quiet, and the only confirmed recruiting efforts will be targeted at lower-level guys. The names you see popping up aren’t because the coaching staff is incompetent; it’s because it’s the only thing they can do right now by the rules, other than maybe follow some D1 guys on social media. Once that portal date comes, we’ll likely see a lot of movement very quickly.
Hope this helps clear up some confusion on the board.
