As one who is a real half-breed Icelander, I take that as a personal insult! sadcoolfrown

Sorry OCF….but if it’s any consolation…I know you can make at least 28.6% of your 3-pointers.

Captain Chaos-Graduates

PAV-Graduates
Breath-Graduates
Conners-Graduates
Simmons-Portal (Dayton, Xavier or Cincinnati)
Kelly-Portal (Pitt or Penn State)
Walking Bucket-Portal (Ohio Northern)
Evans-Portal (Paducah, KY Community College)
Elliott-Portal (Stetson)
Kuany-Portal
Fisher-Returns
Mosley-Returns
Reese-Returns

Bowens-True Freshman
Coach Boals-Tod K (Daddy) Graduate Assistant

From Fran Fraschilla: “The sad reality is that in order to survive in college basketball, in next few weeks, you have to fire the highly paid, unproductive players the way coaches are fired. I think everyone is OK with that.”

Harsh sure.

But reality if head coaches want to survive in today’s world of division-one college basketball.

Scholarships need to be treated like one-year contracts. And this doesn’t go for just the highly paid players. This goes for players who are getting D1 schollies who clearly should be playing on the D2 level. Which is something we are unfortunately used to in the Boals era.

I don't disagree. It's the consequence of players becoming highly paid free agents. If you dont produce then you're not only not producing but limiting the ability to pay for other talent around you.

Now, I'd argue that you also don't want to cut off your nose to spite your face. Meaning some guys can have a down year or need a year or two to develop. If (and this is why the coaches get paid the big bucks) you think that player can improve in the future to the point they out-produce their salary then its worth hanging onto them during the down/over-priced years.

Example. Player A makes 75k/year. Year one they contribute 10k (net negative 65k) but year 2 they contribute 100k (now net is -40k) and year 3 they produce 125k (3 year net is +10k). Then it would have been a bad move to fire them after year one. But thats likely rare and likely only applies to raw bigs who have the potential to become massive difference makers.

This is exactly why colleges are hiring general managers. This is what they do for a living. I'd also say with the recruiting landscape changing so much, having a recruiting/scouting department is now called for to evaluate other d1 players, international players etc. Sure there are recruiting services that you can pay for, but they are also working for other schools. I want to build and control my own staff in-house.

How does a school like OU pay for that? Good question.

Would you rather have a really good coach at 750k and zero support staff?
Or a no name coach at 200k, with a good GM and full scouting depth?

Questions like that are why the AD gets paid the big bucks.

The latter model feels like something one school will try, while others wait and see if it's more advantageous to follow.

St. Bonnies appears to be first in line.

Fisher in the portal really pisses me off. Unlike Elliott, Fisher leaving indicates some failure somewhere along the way whether in talent evaluation, development, relationships, stubbornness with playing other guys at that position, communicating the vision.

First team all state from a public high school in the state capitol a short drive away, at a position of need - we have to make that work.

Now the obvious question, does that sour things with McKinney and Bowens?

Not to mention his family connections to Ohio University.

Is it possible Fisher is just jumping off a sinking ship a year early?

As for the other two, that’s a very good question.

I don't think we can rule out anyone entering the portal. It's Boals' last year under contract. He can't guarantee he'll be there beyond next season nor can he guarantee returnees bulk PT just based on their lack of impact/development so far. He has to lean into the portal for multiple players to save his job.

Really tough spot for the program to be in and it just makes the lame duck season even more pointless IMO. But hey, maybe we'll end up with some new shiny toys on the roster.

I can’t imagine it was easy for Fisher to watch Sheldon play 30+ minutes per game and not have your coach look once in your direction to come off the bench and get some quality minutes.

No brainer.

Let’s see if Jeff and staff continue to sign D2 HS level talent in his lame duck season.

I think this is inaccurate and disingenuous. The recruiting of Ayden doesn't seem like it was poor. He was offered by Texas A&M, Missouri, Seton Hall, Mississippi State and West Virginia. Signing him was a bit of a coup. It's the development and use of Evans that seems to be the major disappointment. But I doubt there was a soul unhappy with this signing when it occurred.

If we can’t get a point guard in the portal or otherwise, how about a Levi Davis “PG in a pinch plan” for next season only (maybe beginning after FB season?)? Especially if it wouldn’t greatly impact his football growth and trajectory.

Jeff said he failed PAV in his last season.

What will he say 12 months from now about Simmons last year in an Ohio uniform?

You can build around Kelly and Simmons. Burris and Kuany showed they can play at this level. Mosley, Bowens and McKinney are unknowns but I do think McKinney is going to be a good one.

I would love to be wrong about Walking Bucket, but what exactly did he show during this past season to make you think he can be a solid 12-15 minute guy in the rotation moving forward? Minus a magical four minute first half Luka Doncic performance against Frank Martin in the Convo, I just didn’t see it. He can’t create his own offense or shoot off the dribble. He’s also extremely slow on defense.

He shot 28.6% from 3 point land.

Again, I hope I am wrong about Walking Bucket because it appears for now that he is coming back.
