Fun stat of the day...this team gave up more PPG than any Ohio team since the 1955-1956 season.

I'm still stuck on the "last year was a wash thing" that he mentioned several times, four by my count. Even if the injuries were that big of a deal, how do you explain being more competitive in games last year versus this year? We have the proof, Jeff.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/ohio/men/202...

Two conference losses by double-digits last season.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/ohio/men/202...

Eight conference losses by double-digits this season.

At least last year the team was competitive. You could at least "see" the forest through the trees. Saying last year was a wash because of injuries is an excuse for how bad they played this year. And he keeps harping on the AJ Brown + resources thing. If we're playing that game, Javan Simmons over AJ Brown is a net positive in the transfer portal. I don't even have time to look up the data, but I'm almost certain that's true.

I'm absolutely shocked he finally took accountability for the Hadaway thing and acknowledging that Pav was an absolute warrior for Ohio this year. But he completely discredited that by doubling down on the resources thing again. I'm sorry Jeff, but resources didn't make you play Sheldon 30+ minutes a night while totally hampering the development of guys like Kuany, Conners, Kelly (early on), Burris, Breath and Fisher. That's a choice YOU and your staff made.
The wash comment was wild. It almost gets lost between the AJB and funds comments. Also, a great point on Simmons being a net positive over AJB all things considered. It mitigates his “there are guys you can’t replace when you don’t have the funds and resources to do it”.

While he took accountability for Hadaway, he’s lacked accountability for just not putting together a good enough roster as whole, developing talent, and in game strategy.

Give me a break. Is this not his seventh season? That is something you say when you take over from a guy who just finished in last place.
Agree with both of you and cc-cat specifically. I thought that too — maybe it could mean a staff shakeup. However, like players, what assistant coach would want to commit to a contract year head coach on the hot seat?

And whenever I do watch a post-game press conference with Boals on the mic, it's like the guy is on autopilot, lacking emotion, and is trying to sell you on watching paint dry instead.

Enjoy another under .500 season with this guy. Basketball culture needs a change.

Regardless of our feelings about Jeff Boals, this program has dropped to the second or, more likely, third tier of the MAC, and it happened under his watch.

Last night I saw a team that was ill-prepared to handle the opposing team's strategy of smothering Pav and challenging our other guards/wings to penetrate the lane and hit shots. Every other coach knows our weaknesses but we lack the brain power, discipline and athleticism to respond. Oh, and we are egregious on D.
I don't think Boals would even disagree there have been some recruiting misses.

And I hate the way this team was constructed. I bet he does too. I said it from the very beginning. It looks like we took the highest ranked of what was left. And what we got was a team that was at the bottom of the top. Not good enough to consistently compete at the highest levels, but not bad enough to get blown off the floor.

Hang with a 30-0 team one night, get slapped around by Kent the next night. A lot of shooters, and no makers. No clear #1. No GUY. Jack is the best we had - and damn if he didn't put up some performances for us, but he's also 6'2" and a weak defender. Simmons came on late, but still - a 6'7" center. He's a good player, but he will always struggle against size or girth (that fatty last night had his way all night), and he's not good enough outside to create space.

The highest ranked of what was left might be our lot in life, but if it has to be that way then we need to absolutely comb D2. We need to scour Europe. All this may lead back to our financial situation and how much they choose not to spend on recruiting, because we need the money for Jack/Simmons/Hadaway, etc. Certainly, Lamar isn't hanging out in England very often looking for the Oboh's (Buffalo), or Iceland (Atlason) or Italy (Bettiol), but someone must have eyes over there? It appears no, or there is something that keeps us from landing these guys. It might simply be philosophy, and Boals doesn't want to swing and miss on a Euro. What keeps us from going after an unheralded D2 guy? That he wasn't good enough before, so he can't be good now?

- Aidan McDowell, 6'4" Soph - 26.7 points (1 assist) for Western Colorado. Doesn't pass, but gets buckets. 1st Team D2. 39% from 3. Made 93 in 28 games. For comp, Sheldon was #1 on our team with 66. Announced he will enter the portal.
- Jaquay Randolph, 6'10" JR - 21 pints, 15 rebounds, 1 block. Led D2 in double-doubles with 25 in 28 games.
- Marko Serenac, 6'10" JR - 14 points, 11 rebounds. Barry U by way of Serbia.
- Will Davies, 6'4" Soph - 13.7 points, 7.3 assists for Saint Anselm (D2 East Region POY)
- Jovan Ristic, 6'5" Soph - 11.8 points, 9.6 boards - had 15 double doubles this season. Also Saint Anselm.
- Jo Jo Wallace, 6'3" Soph - 24.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists. SNHU, which is apparently not just an online school.

This season has really torn me apart. I'm usually a rah, rah go team optimistic guy. I've just found it so hard to get excited about this team. I liked Hadaway's intensity and his obvious desire to want to help his team win, but then he whines at every foul called against him or perceived-but-not-called foul on him by an opponent. Unfortunately, the record I'll remember is his #10 national ranking in technical fouls this season. [One more, and at six he could have been in a 8-way tie for second.] Simmons and Pavs were bright spots as individuals, but the team as a whole had almost zero chemistry. Just the opposite of that team from Oxford where each player always seemed to be in sync with the others on the court, our team seemed to be mainly out of sync with some rare exceptions. But usually those little sparks of team play and coordinated efforts proved to be rare exceptions to the totality of 40 minutes of Boals ball for the entire game. And, then there was Boals' substitution patterns. He often left me scratching my head when a guy comes in, looks great and seems to be getting into the grove, and next thing I know he's on the bench and some more favored guy is back on the court. Most coaches believe it's a good idea in general to go with the hot hand, but Boals seems to have some predetermined idea that usually trumps what he's seeing on the court. I apologize for the rant. Had to get it off my chest.

Note to Coach: Please don't recruit Terri Miller Jr. of Prairie State, the undisputed technical foul leader this season clocking in at an incredible eight Ts.

Yes, prime example of looking at D-2 players is local kid Kyler D’Augustino (Albany Alexander) who played a couple years @ West Liberty and followed his coach to IU Indy this year. Made 3rd team all Horizon League while avg. 18 pts. per game (3rd in league) and field goal percentage 53% (6th in league).

In Boals speak that means he's no longer going to prioritize character over talent in recruiting.
Which is funny bc how much character did we actually have on this year's roster? On the court not much, I'm sure these are good kids off the court.
Led the league in technicals.

As I’ve posted before I started my Ohio Bball following in 1969. Saw the good and the bad over those years. This team excelled to me at flexing, whining and getting “T’d” up. The HC played more than a supporting role in the whining and “T” category. This program has trended downward since the Saul leftovers left Athens. I have lost faith that Boals can right this ship.

He’s a GREAT kid, and a hell of a player! Yet if we offered him out of HS at his size and numbers, you’d have shit a brick. Yes, he’s in DI,and he followed his coach there. He will not finish there. End of the day,he’s 5’11”, great off the dribble, great range, loves to play fast. But at 17 you’d have laughed at taking him.

Dude checked out on this program and his alma mater months ago.

Boals was my #1 choice for the job and he’s failed to deliver.

Two losing seasons in a row (not counting non-division one wins).

Too many scholarships given to guys who should be playing at Paducah Community College and Ohio Northern.

Lack of player development.

Zero control over player temperament.

Time for a change.

Who in the "wold" wants a guy that shoots 46% from three while holding a perfect gpa when we could get another player that averages 2 points a game, can't pass his classes, still gets to go with the team to the Bahamas?

Losing 17 games while making $$$$$$$ should be what gets a coach fired.

Be careful FishBates. I was on the Bahamas Ezuma train before anyone and got crucified for saying how poorly Boals handled the Bahamas Ezuma situation. Boals should be fired for that on its own for allowing Bahamas to go down water slides in the Bahamas. Great discipline Jeff in allowing a guy who can’t pass classes and sit for two years, but still allow him to make a free trip to the Bahamas.

I used to read comments on here for years without registering to post but the amount of absurd BS that gets spewed forth sometimes is abhorrent. It needs to be called out. For the people who hope a pink slip is being drafted right now and waiting to be issued Monday on our coaching staff, good for you on knowing what is best for the long term good of the program. Boals may have played through multiple ACL injuries back in 1991-1994 and that might make him a local hero to the old timers in this area, but an 18 year old high school senior prospect was born in 2008, around 15 years after Boals played. They don't know or care what injuries he played through.

And some of the blind leap of faith people need to wake up and smell the coffee. Especially the one bragging on Evans a few weeks ago as a major player next season because he "looked good shooting his free throws."

Yes. Yes I would outwork him and out recruit him. Lazy recruiting is having 20% of your roster from one slightly above average high school program. And having 60% of your roster from one metropolitan area within 80 miles from campus.

I would also be a better talent evaluator. I would know enough to see that players like Sheldon, Nicol, Estis and a cast of others are not D1 basketball players.

Maybe I will apply when the job opens.

According to Verbal commits.com, a grand total of ZERO power forwards and/or centers were offered in the h.s. class of 2026. That's worse than "lazy." That's throwing in the towel. By comparison, Toledo offered two. Kent State offered three. How did we do against those two this season?

And if good academics make for a failure in a basketball program, lets take a look at the US News rankings academically of schools that are locks to be in brackets release tomorrow night.

University of Michigan—Ann Arbor is ranked No. #20 in National Universities. It's also ranked No. #3 in Top Public Schools.

University of Virginia is ranked No. #26 in National Universities. It's also ranked No. #4 in Top Public Schools.

Duke University is ranked No. #7 in National Universities.

Vanderbilt University is ranked No. #17 in National Universities.

Obviously no one can take it away from them, but I thought this tweet by Barlow was a little arrogant given the current state of the program and going into a contract year.

Can anyone tell me what Kyle Barlow does exactly? Boals is the HC. Hes the face of the program. He's steering the ship. Buck stops with him etc.

Lamar Thornton seems to be our recruiter. I cant say for every player, but almost everyone it seems gets introduced to OU by Lamar and offered by Lamar. Hes the one watching games, shaking hands, bringing in talent.

Kyle Barlow....sits on the bench. He argues with refs. Maybe as much as Hadaway. He likes to start fights in handshake lines. At 5'7 he is our secret expert at coaching up bigs to all league caliber. He likes to talk smack on X after his rivals lose games (he taught Javan how to flex when down 20).

I'm only half kidding. Wtf does this guy bring to the table?

Given all our apparent recruiting misses, we might want to ask the same about Lamar Thornton.

The culture of this program is really pretty obnoxious. We're convinced we're good and relevant and carry ourselves that way.

But actually, there's not a single person currently on the roster for next season who has won a game in the Mac tournament in an Ohio jersey. The senior class that just graduated won two MAC tournament games total.

Absolutely pathetic.

Said it last month. If you aren’t going to fire a mediocre head coach with zero passion, then get rid of the assistants. Boals said it himself…Ohio needs to hit the reset button. You better look at your staff first Jeff.
