Maybe O.U. should call Bobby Hurley ?
With the obscure names being mentioned for the St. Bonaventure job, wouldn't Hurley be a lock for that one if he wants it? Boals is even a bigger name than some of what is being rumored out there for the Bonnies.
Remember, Woj is calling the shots at St. Bonnies. Sounds like he's digging into his NBA and alumni pool with David Vanterpool (alumni/Wizards assistant) and Mike MacDonald (alumni/Daemen College HC).

If the plan is to pay the coach less and allocate more towards roster, MacDonald might not be a bad play. He's racked up over 230 wins over the last 10 seasons at the D2 level including 28-1 last year.

Time to shock the world, Coach. Lead us to the MAC title, a first round upset in the NCAAA tournament and then get the last laugh by leaving us for the St. Bonnie job.

Stranger things have happened.

Ajay Sheldon final game of career vs Kent State in 2026 MAC Quarterfinals

34 minutes
1-6 FG (1-6 from 3)
3 rebounds
1 assist
1 turnover

Boals let an undersized shooting guard (who shot 95.3% off his shots off-balanced) average 30+ minutes per game his senior season.

Coaching malpractice.

A stellar 2-5 record all-time in MAC Tournament against Akron, Kent, and Toledo. Both wins came in the same year when Ohio won the Championship.

From someone who doesn't focus too much on basketball:

The Basketball Bobcats desperately need to blow everything up. Fire Boals and start all over with everyone. There's nothing to really like or admire about this current setup.

Those wins came with someone else's recruits! Unfortunately, he got all the credit and an unearned contract extension and pay raise out of it. If only he could recruit and coach as well as he negotiates!

The former AD is responsible for rewarding Coach Boals as the highest paid coach in the conference. You can thank her for the high priced salary.

If the former AD was not responsible for Boals being rewarded as the highest paid coach in
the league, then who signed off on his high priced deal?

I asked my favorite AI Bot buddy what were the chances of Boals being fired after the 1st round MAC Tournament exit, and here is its reply:

Yes, Jeff Boals' seat is getting hotter after Ohio's first-round elimination from the MAC Tournament. The team faced No. 3 seed Kent State and, despite the high hopes for a deep run, their exit marks a disappointing end to a season where they finished with their first losing record under Boals (15-16).

Performance Review
Inconsistent Play: Ohio fluctuated throughout the regular season, demonstrating both potential and significant difficulties. They had a rough start with only one win in the first eight games but showed some resilience by winning a stretch of nine out of ten.
Defensive Struggles: Ohio had the highest opponent three-point shooting percentage in the conference (36.3%) and was second to last in total defense. This poor performance likely contributed to their struggles in the tournament.

Coaching Implications
Pressure for Results: This season marks the first time Boals has led a team to a losing record, increasing scrutiny around his coaching effectiveness, especially as he enters his seventh year.
Decision Point: With the disappointing end to this season, university officials may reassess his position, particularly given the expectations for success in the MAC and the NCAA tournament.
Contractual Obligations: Boals has a contract running through April 2028, and his termination would come with financial implications. If he were to be fired before May 2025, Ohio would owe approximately **$1 million**, which decreases in subsequent years.

Expert Opinions
Coaching Changes: The competitive landscape in the MAC shows that other teams are performing well, and with coaching changes occurring in the league, Ohio may feel the need to reevaluate its direction.  Given these dynamics, while it's not a foregone conclusion that he will be fired, the likelihood has certainly increased due to the disappointing finish this season.

I believe that a lot of this was gathered and summarized from the experts on BA.

Ohio University will not dismiss Coach Boals after only one losing season in his seven seasons. They will not want to pay the buyout unless one of you millionaires pony up.

Yeah he did with lots of Saul's guys but was also smart enough to use Preston correctly. And, of course, let's not forget if Sears somehow sticks around 2 years; would've helped.

Can't imagine OU has the funds to whack him now or attract a good candidate, unless they build a practice gym, add payroll, add payroll, improve the Convo and add payroll. So 1 more year and then hire Miami's third or graduate assistant. They are, I'm told, the Gonzaga of the Midwest.

Pathetic presser. How is Brown even relevant? If he didn’t leave, he would have redshirted at Ohio. Boals is done. And I mean done mentally. Zero fire. He doesn’t want to do this anymore.

Pathetic excuse. This team had talent, but wasted the non-conference season not developing a deeper rotation. Kuwany should have took more minutes from Hadaway with disruptive behavior on the floor. Hadaway was a cancer on this team. He singled handedly blew games for this team with his temper tantrums. Games unraveled. He made bad plays, defensive lapse after pouting about not getting calls in his favor. He is slow on defense and shot poor from 3. Hadaway failed this team his senior year. He was a disaster in the biggest games and moments. Boals should have done what Groce did to Bassett and suspend him in January for a few week to change his bad influence on the team. Officials could have calls a lot more Techs and ejected him. He made contact with an official at least once. Surprised MAC didn't suspend him. Lack of discipline and able to handle pressure hurt this team. Boals never won a MAC title with AJ Brown. The kid was always hurt and wasn't all-mac first team when he did play. Please lets admit the coaches wiffed on Connors and Breath. Both huge busts.

This coach lost to Toledo twice, Miami twice, Kent State twice, Akron, BGSU. I can't recall him beating a division I team in-state. 0-8 against in-state conference rivals with this team. How many were by double digits. He lost 4 games at home vs in state conference rivals. Never mind the losses to Bethune Cookman, Ball State Old Dominion, 13-17 vs division I teams. This was an experienced roster we had. They spend money on some transfers, He has struggled non-conference vs in state teams losing to Cleveland State and Youngstown State in recent years. Boals has Ohio at the bottom of in state programs. He has to go. He has been a disaster last couple year. Despite a down MAC he can't get out of first round in MAC after mediocre regular season. Watching Saint Mary's, George Mason and Akron whip our ass on national tv this week was hard to watch. This team had poor basketball IQ. Dumb play and fouls all season then bad sportsmanship. Ohio needs to dump this coaching staff. This is two poor seasons in a row. taking away the non-division I cupcakes this team has a losing record. If your non going to hold Boals accountable then perhaps Ohio needs to drop down the America East and play Maine and New Hampshire. Then again I don't think Boals can beat Vermont since he recruits a bunch of guys that hoist bricks all season long and don't defend.

If Miami can find $8-10 million for football NIL money for this fall's season, we can dig up a measly million bucks to buy out Boals' contract. To do otherwise, to paraphrase another poster on this board, would be athletic director malfeasance.
