Boals's undoing is allowing Hadaway to be a jerk and have the longest leash in history while playing Ajay Otterbein starter mins.

Ohio 74
Miami 90

Ass kicked by #1 rival

Zero discipline

Lack of talent

Coach Boals seems real content.

New AD should move on from Boals now, but like many have said, highly unlikely with buyout.

What a shitcapade we are in store for next season. Looking at 10 new players. Keep Kelly somehow if you can, but as far as I’m concerned, everyone else can go. Simmons never looked comfortable in an Ohio uniform from day one. I can’t see him staying. The returning supporting cast is littered with D2/3 caliber talent.

Schaus was ok for basketball, but that was about all he cared about. As for Rod McDavis, I agree with some of what was said above. If McDavis was in charge he wouldn’t have let the most successful Bobcat football coach in the last half century leave town.
Ah, a point of agreement. McDavis, as he did when Solich was hired, would have injected himself into the equation. That still doesn't absolve Albin for the bad timing mistake he made. He could have weathered the storm, but he didn't. If he had played his cards right his dog would have never gotten sick.
OCF- that is laughable. “He could have weathered the storm and bad timing.” How about assigning blame to the former AD who refused to take care of his contract. You and others know he was treated much differently than other athletic department employees. Albin was her most valuable employee and she dropped the ball. Quit taking up for the former AD who would have been dismissed if she was at a power four school for her many blunders. She had no problem paying Boals for his annual fifth seed finishes. I’m guessing you remember her secretly renewing the womens hoop coach for four consecutive non winning seasons and three of which were worse than horrible. You talk a good game, but have you ever once spoke to Coach Albin. Did you ask him why he is no longer in Athens? Why should Coach Albin have to “play his cards right”, when the football program
had unprecedented success under his leadership? The former AD failed miserably to recognize those accomplishments. Get back to me in five years when you see that type of success again.

Unlikely for it to happen, but if Boals is let go and both Steele and Groce move on to greener pastures the MAC could be wide open in '26-27.

Give him a break! After all, his team did beat Miami-Hamilton!

He'll get another year because they can't afford a buyout. Too bad they can't just reasign him to coach the Ohio University-Chillicothe Hilltoppers!

OK, let me put it bluntly. Albin acted like immature 21-year-old in his first job that gets angry and burns his bridges. He acted very unwisely. This doesn't excuse Cromer for her actions. I don't expect you to understand that because you don't deal well with subtle situations. In your mind everything is a dichotomy -- good vs bad, evil vs holy. While that's applicable in some situations. This is not one of them.

If Boals is back next year, I promise to drop my season tickets for the first time in 14 years. I might come to a game just because I like being in Athens, but next year is going to suck just as hard as this year.

Please, please move on from Boals. Where can I write the check for the buyout?

Analyst Mark Adams during the Miami game noting over and over how Ohio was “out of gas” because of no depth. That’s not true. We have bodies. We played nine last night and bench averaged 12 min each. We have a TALENT problem. How in the hell is the talent gap where it is currently between Miami and Ohio? It’s embarrassing.

And we have a massive coaching problem that can’t grow the players we have. It was an awful game. Typical Ohio. 5-21 from 3. Out rebounded by 9. Out assisted by 6. And so on. So it’s not depth. I think Adams trying to be kind because Boals is his buddy, but I really wish he would’ve called it out.

Also the Kauny treatment still makes me crazy. Is he wild and out of control? Yes. Does he sometimes get lost on D? Yes. But he’s easily the most athletic guy we have after JJ. He needs to play. Be molded. After 25 games Boals plays him at the 3 for the first time? I mean make it make sense?

Boals need to go.
Staff needs to go.

Ohio basketball needs to start over. Boals is not equipped to be a head coach in the NIL/Portal era. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I truly believe he’s quiet quitting. He doesn’t want to be a head coach anymore. Comparing his demeanor to Steele’s last night couldn’t be more different and jarring.

And if Boals is back next season, bye bye NIL donations and say hello to more Ben Nicols, Bahamas Ezumas, the Whiz’s and Walking Buckets of the world on future rosters.

It’s pathetic and embarrassing where this program is year 7 into the Jeff Boals era.

Wiznitzer had back to back dunks to spark a win over fiami like 2 years ago (?) while Breath couldn't make a layup a couple of times right by the rim. Breath is clearly below the level of Searles who was a D-2 guy and even Wiz.

Yes…you can add Breath to the list….AKA as “Mr. Softee”. He serves up nothing but soft served ice cream running up and down the court.

This is another example as to why I believe Boals has completely checked out. WOUB’s Grant Kiefer has the sound bite on his Twitter page. This is Boals quote following Miami game when asked why Ohio can’t have the recent success that Miami is having.

“They deserve it. Travis has done a great job. Not sure what they brought back…seven or eight of their top guys. You know they obviously have the resources financially to be able to do that. Consistency is big to have that returning group come in.”
_________________

Boals talks about Miami “keeping the group together”. They lost Kraft. Ipsaro blew his knee out. Sorry Jeff….just stop it.

Resources: Boals will continue to lean on that. He could have the same resources as Arizona and he’d still complain. Nobody in the conference complains more about lack of NIL money than Boals.

Also, zero anger in his voice following the game about his team’s performance. Boals is a picture of content. Cashing checks until someone tells him he can’t cash them anymore. Dude has checked out and it sure looks like the team has as well. His lame duck season in 2026-2027 is going to be miserable to watch. And sorry Jeff…you can’t petition the NCAA for Sheldon to have a 5th year just so you can bring back your favorite starting shooting guard of all-time for one more season.

And the 7-1 center (Potter) who transferred to Kentucky and is redshirting.

Another guy who shoots 40% from three.

Our tall guys shooting from three:
Kuany 28%
Hadaway 26%
Evans 17%
Simmons 12%
Breath 0%

Ohio might not have as many resources as some schools in the league but they have plenty more than a bunch of others. Know one way to get more people invested, win!

Boals had a roster picked to win the league last year and went 16-16. People aren't donating to the NIL because no one believes in the vision of the program.

Yeah, life is harder in Athens than more populated areas or schools with bigger donors but the football program is doing just fine in the NIL world with different coaches leading the way. We consistently use money as an excuse for basketball when the truth is our head coach isn't doing a good job.

Also, we've been able to keep players like Pavs and Hadaway while attracting transfers like Simmons. We have some money. We just don't allocate it well nor do we have a good roster construction strategy or plan for the players we do have.

I watched Agee and Hill on TV yesterday playing for Texas A&M.

Other MAC teams get poached in the portal. It's the world we live in.

Mid-majors at the top of the genre have figured out how to deal with that. Murray State (18 times in the big dance) is in the middle of friggin nowhere and they don't use that as an excuse.

I spent a bit of time mining the interwebs for details of Coach Boals’ yearly buyouts, and the only place I could find them, believe it or not, was in a BA post from our own Kevin Finnegan from spring 2024 in which he put out an FOIA request to the university: http://www.bobcatattack.com/messageboard/topic.asp?FromPa...

The tldr version:
- His buyout drops from 900K to 750K at the end of May 2026
- Unclear if he’s owed anything after May 2027
- He is up for a “performance review” in April 2026

If Slade does want to pull the trigger after this season, does he wait until June and risk missing out on most good coaches to save $150K? Probably not. If he retains Jeff, does the performance review include directions to change staff and/or recruiting strategies, as some on this board have suggested?

Either way, could be an interesting few months coming up.

Actually two of the better transfers Boals has brought in were D2 guys in Searls and Tommy Schmock. Both were the type of guys Miami has. Smart, hard-working dudes with a little edge who shared the ball and were tough as nails. I wish we had both this year. Don't knock on D2.
