He's due the largest buy-out in history. Is that why you think he'd take $800K (at the top end) to coach here? Tang spent 30 years coaching in Texas. 4 years at K-State. Not sure he'd even pick-up the phone. Especially if he's gonna get an $18M paid vacation.
There is *some* truth to being one of 365 jobs, but getting this guy to even visit Athens would be a stretch.
If we're really gonna play this game... and again, I don't want to and don't think Boals is going anywhere next season...
REAL POSSIBILITIES:
Jamall Walker - Current Ohio State assistant, coached at OU twice as an assistant under Groce and was with the team during the Sweet 16 run back in 2012.
WALT - Do we wanna dig back into the alumni bag of tricks? Offutt is an assistant at Illinois State. Spent some years under Tod K at Toledo. I think he's ready. He also looks like he could still play. Show these boys how to make shots. He's also apparently a pretty good recruiter, because his time at Chattanooga they had a Top 100 class and were crediting him with bringing in Indiana guy Kevin Easly (also an assistant coach now).
Dustin Ford - ? He's an alum. That's always nice. Would he come after we fire Boals? But he's been hanging out with Groce for like two decades. I think he would jump at the chance to come back here. I like the idea of a young guy like Walt more however.
I like all three of our assistants, though if people are upset with the lack of recent success enough to fire Boals, doubt you want to just promote one of his guys, BUT Lamar is on my short list. Also, Barlow is highly thought of. So is Lee.
KICK THE TIRES:
John Brannen - Risk / Reward Hire. Fired from Cincinnati for running some very intense practices. Had some pretty wild quotes about conditioning (and the teams lack of). Apparently, in the midst of a 12-win season he got worse and more angry. And some players spoke out about mistreatment. They also found out he was paying for a players mental-health therapy, which was an NCAA benefits violation - and a direct contradiction to the he doesnt care about players narrative. Had 20 wins in year one, and was fired after his 12 COVID wins. Have family who went to UC and they think it was all about avoiding a large buy-out, internal politics. Him allegedly being a tyrant at practice was overblown. He took Northern Kentucky to the NCAA Tournament twice in his four years. Just 52. From Kentucky. Went to Marshall. Maybe hes learned from his past and is ready to move on from it? His previous success is intriguing, though I bet there is some hesitation from a recruiting perspective. Nobody wants to play for a tyrant, but do they want to play for a winner?
Jeff Capel - If PITT fires him... I like it a lot. 284 career wins. 50 years old. Though I would imagine he'd go make $500K+ as a coveted P5 assistant. OU is likely nowhere near his radar, but being in Pittsburgh for so long he knows the region well. Has run some great programs.
Eric Henderson - First year HC at Drake. Long time coach at South Dakota State. Won 30 games in 2022. Two NCAA tournament appearances in 5 years. Won 129 games. Not seeing much early success at Drake, but obviously had a previously relationship to Lars. 47 years old.
STRETCH:
Joel Justus - I think he'll have some P5 suitors, but he's just up the road looking for his first HC job. Current Assoc HC for Ohio State. Part of some really successful runs at Kentucky and NC State. Was also on Bobby Hurley’s staff at Arizona State. Resume speaks for itself. Would be a huge pick-up.
Nate James - Far more likely, and less successful than Capel, Long-time Duke assistant under Coach K. Detroit native. Had two brief years at Austin Peay before being fired. Currently Assoc HC at Howard. Have we ever had someone on the bench with 2 NCAA Championship rings? I'd like to see those shining at an introductory press conference. Think that would be quite a recruiting tool in the MAC.
