WxM: Sounds like the female version of John Thompson Jr’s old Georgetown teams. [Not talking about John Thompson III, his son, who also coached at Georgetown, but more recently.]

An apt comparison.

Elli Garnett was in street clothes today following the aforementioned bulldozing. Haven't heard how long she'll be out for. Sat with Cassidy Lafler and Aja Austin, also in street clothes, who have yet to suit up this season, presumably due to their own injuries.

They came out sluggish today against Wilberforce. Got out rebounded in the first half by a team smaller than them, and even lost the lead a couple of times late in the first and early in the second. Just played flat-out slow, too. Decided to hit the gas pedal in the second half and went on a 24-0 run to win 96-64.

Dani Scully got her first career start in relief of the injured Garnett and went for 11 and 8 despite playing only half the game. Bob went with a basic five-person hockey line change as his substitution strategy, so no one played more than 21 minutes. He deviated from this only when forced due to Asiah Baxter strangely fouling out, subbing in walk-on Madison Lim. Baxter has struggled the past couple of games missing good looks at the rim.

Bailey Tabeling didn't seem like herself either. She scored seven points and that was it. She normally fills the stat sheet. To not pull down a single rebound and get only two late assists (to three turnovers) against a small, unathletic team like Wilberforce really stands out. I get that there looked to be some experimentation to let others do some distribution, but it didn't look good at times.

Gigi Bower came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19. Her shot looks consistent every time, much like her effort. The newcomer from Nassau, Antonicia Moultrie, again looked the part. I wish she wasn't a junior.

Add Associate Head Coach Tavares Jackson to the list of the (not) walking wounded. He was on a knee scooter.

Wooooooo Ohio with a resilient gut check win at Central Michigan that can set a tone for the conference season.

Ohio got down seven with about a minute and a half to go, but from there they got just enough to go right. Down 75-71 with under 30 to go, Garnett forced a steal that led to a Baxter layup. CMU hit free throws to go back up four and then Baxter got a friendly bounce on a three with under 10 seconds to go. CMU hits their free throws at the other end, but Ohio had a timeout and advanced the ball to the front court with 1.8 seconds left. Then it was Tabeling time: https://x.com/OhioWBasketball/status/2006459310239527202

Ohio scored first in overtime with a Ranallo three and controlled the rest of the way for a two point win.

Garnett returned from missing the Wilberforce game and played 26 minutes, but Bower looked to hurt an ankle in the game as she sat at the end of the bench with a shoe off and a foot elevated.

Favorable stretch now. Four of their next five opponents have a losing record and the one who doesn't is 7-5 EMU who we play at home.

Huge opportunity for this team to go on a run, one game at a time.

What was most impressive was Tabeling's composure and sense of time. She knew she had enough time to pump fake and it worked laughably well. It was great to see her bounce back in a big way, both from the last game and the way the shots have been going really since the start of last year. She keeps playing through it and that's admirable, but also because this team needs her to score to succeed.

Same for Bella Ranallo. It certainly wasn't an efficient night offensively, but we needed every one of her points.

Interesting to see Garnett act as sort of a point forward upon her return. Led the team in assists, including on the final regulation play.

I wasn't able to catch the game vs. Akron, but the ladies took care of business against a bad Zips team and won convincingly. Tabeling has finally found her shot again, going 4/5 from 3. Bella Ranallo disrupted their offense with five steals and Akron couldn't hit an open look when they did have one. Bower remains out with her ankle injury.

Ohio nearly gets to triple digits taking down Eastern Michigan 96-87. And while that sounds cool on its own, Eastern Michigan's largest lead was 18. Ohio's largest lead was 21. In the span of five game minutes in the second quarter, Ohio went from down 38-20 to up 43-41. They forced some turnovers but mostly it was holding EMU to one shot per possession while getting a few second chance points of their own.

Three players scored 19+ (Tabeling, Garnett, and Williams who went 4-4 from three) and no player played more than 30 minutes. The game was a showcase of depth in that regard as Mcwhorter was out with the flu.

It's refreshing to see this program rebound with player availability (knock on wood) and better fundamental play. They are 3-0 in MAC play and the upcoming schedule gives a great shot at 6-0.

Buffalo is pretty terrible so the win in itself wasn't great. But what an incredible turnaround. Was 4-14 in the MAC last year...Now 4-0.

Going to be a good test today in the Convo against Toledo to see if the good start in MAC play was just a mirage after beating the bottom half of the conference, or if the ladies are real contenders for a great seed in Cleveland. Should be a good game, but also a game they should win. In fact, the next three games (vs. UMass, at Miami) will be a great barometer for how they really stack up). The snow should hold off until after the game is over, so there's no good reason not to check them out.

Sigh.

Zero baskets the entire first quarter. Zero. That did them in. More than cold shooting, it was befuddlement at what Toledo was doing. Tons of turnovers.

That and getting out of position on rebounds were killer. This was a winnable game, but Toledo was just more sound overall.

Injuries to Tabeling, Scully, and Garnett. Tabeling came back in and did fine. Scully took a charge hard late despite having four fouls and I think she felt like she was going to vomit. Garnett can't put weight on her left leg. That's the concerning one.

Scully is a heck of a player. Love what she brings.

Watched that game from the seccond quarter on, so missed that wonderful 1 qt. From what I saw it seemed that UT had better athletes than we did. Kind of like last night with the men against Akron, but to a lesser degree.

They also didn't miss free throws. I counted two misses while the game was up for grabs. We missed three or four in the first quarter alone. Hitting those would have kept us close and changed the complexion of the game.

Good point. I did notice that they were extremely accurate with their free throws. In the women's games I've watched it seems to me we live or die by the three-point shot. When we are on from the outside, we have a really good game and can beat almost anyone. And, shooting well from outside the arc, of course, opens up the lanes for drives as well. I think that's where the athleticism comes in. Some teams have players who can create on their own underneath. We don't seem to have that in general.

Ladies end a 3 game skid in convincing fashion, throttling WMU 76-37. WMU with 31 turnovers...yikes. 3 for 22 from 3...double yikes. It was 47-14 at the half. The starters played 91 minutes and the bench 109 minutes.

Now 7-4...currently sit in 5th and the next game is a big one for seeding against 6-4 Toledo.

Bob Boldon's postgame press conferences are almost always worth watching (on YouTube). Rather than get the typical coach speak (listening, Jeff Boals?), Boldon gives frank, thoughtful answers. Last night's conference opened with insightful remarks about the game's promotion, "Girls & Women in Sports." Basically, "it's 50 years since Title IX and we still have to prove women belong in organized sports?"

Well for a number years now there have been more women in medical schools than men, but you'd never know it listening to medical school admissions offices talk about the need to proactively attract female applicants. It takes time for bureaucracies and bureaucrats to come to grips with new realities.

Ladies picked up a nice win at home today over Kent. The Cats built a big lead on hot shooting that drastically cooled off late in the game. A lead of a little over 20 got down to as small (I think) as 6 in the 4th but the ladies got some buckets and held off the Flashes comeback.

Bad loss last night at 3-9 Akron in double overtime. No cupcakes remain but a win vs BG at home would likely seal a top 6 seed.

Great play call on a sideline out of bounds to go to Jennings one-on-one to tie the game in the first OT when the whole building probably thought the ball would go to Tabeling.

Boldon went ballistic on the baseline lead official on a Tabeling three attempt at the end of 2OT. Replay did look like the defender hit the inside of her elbow. It's actually the trail official's call down the sideline, but the lead in that play should have eyes on it too.

The Akron ladies set a school record for made 3s in that game. In one stretch in the fourth quarter they hit something like 7 out 0f 8. We were not hitting 3s. Before the barrage of 3s, the Bobcats had a double-digit lead and looked to be cruising to an easy victory.
