Is it Groce or the Akron NCAA Tournament Jinx? I believe that UA has never once won an NCAA D1 basketball tournament game in its entire history. James Naismith, who once worked in Akron, is probably looking down in disgust! ;-)

More March failures for John Groce. 14 straight years of NCAA tourney failure.
And yet we’d all love for Ohio to be on the national stage playing Texas Tech in the NCAA Tournament today.

Instead, we have a coach who specializes in recruiting division-two talent and playing a six-foot shooting guard 30+ minutes per game who can’t shoot.

Stay bitter with the Groce Akron success.
Just playing your game taking any chance to make grand far reaching declarations. Only one of us is obsessed with what Groce is doing at Akron.
Obsessed with and respectful of are entirely two different things. Regardless of their recent NCAA outings (how many 12, 13, or 14 seeds actually win a game in the tournament), the Zips have been the MAC entry the last three years - first time that has happened. You have to recognize and respect that success.

Since 1985 (first round) winning percentages:

12 seeds: 35.6%
13 seeds: 20.6%
14 seeds: 14.3%

Alan…for some reason…the haters in this thread don’t put “Groce” and “respect” in the same sentence. It’s all luck.

We had Gary Trent for three years and only made one tournament with a historic great MAC player.
Speaking of Gary Trent.

Not to take away anything from going to the NCAA Tourney,BUT winning the Preseason NIT at the Garden, with everything that went along with it,including the 110 on the Today Show was just special.
The best part of the 110 performance that night, was the impromptu pep rally on the southeast corner of The Garden after the championship game. People were dancing in the street. Great times that night.

John Groce's days in the Mid-American Conference are now officially over for good.

College Of Charleston hoops just got a massive upgrade and the Groce family is moving to one of the best cities in the country.

Now let's see if Jeff can beat a Groce-less Akron squad in his lame duck season.

Good for John Groce. I'm assuming it's for a bigger payday and he's earned it.

Often times these deals include some excellent sweeteners. A primo price sell his house, a primo price buying a house. A country club membership. A car. Lots of things a booster can provide. With no football team basketball must be top dog in Charleston.

It will be interesting to see who gets the Akron job and will they be as successful as Groce.

The last coach at Charleston made $1.1 million in 2025 so I'm guessing Groce will get more than that? Also, Dustin Ford is the new coach in Akron.

i just found out yesterday that jhon groce will be leaving akron to coach at charleston. i wouldve thought he wouldve gone to a high major. butler and the cincinatti bearcats. have coach openings .groce wouldve been good for either one. dustin ford will be coach at akron next year. he should step up in recruiting and schedule harder non conference games.
