With the worst team in the MAC, John Groce gets a road MAC Tourney win at WMU and the Zips started the game trailing 18-0. Now I know he has haters on this board (which I don't get) and he probably won't win a game in Cleveland this week, but this is fact: John Groce knows how to win March tournament basketball games and this should worry every Bobcat fan. And it's going to get tougher to beat him in the coming years with the talent he has coming in. #HeCanRecruit

I'm going out on a limb and predict Akron makes it to the MAC Finals. Watch much of the second half of their win over WMU, and they looked much more polished than the team I saw early in the season, and nothing like the team we put up 99 points on. They'll probably end up with a CBI bid with a slightly sub par record.

Remember when Western was the preseason pick to win this league? I guess we can hang our hat on being eliminated on the same day as the Broncos. Groce understands that in a one bid league, your regular season matters to an extent but March matters more. The guy wins when it counts, at least in this league.

Yep^^^^ In a one bid league, winning in March is the only thing that matters and the only thing people remember. Groce understands it very, very well.

They have Eastern and possibly Toledo next? Cake walk. The other bracket is waaaaay better with Kent and Buffalo in it. CMU is also a great "team."

You should go jump on their/his bandwagon in NE Ohio. They'd love to have you. And most here wouldn't miss you.

You enjoy the off-season too 100%Cat. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect that. Groce took this program to a place where we might never see it go again in our lifetime. I'll always respect and admire the job he did here. #12Months

I disagree, I think we can be as high as a 3-seed in the MAC tourney again.

C'mon, 100%Cat. I'd bet most, if not all, Ohio basketball fans do NOT remember what seed the Bobcats have been for the MAC tourney over the years.

On the other hand, I'd bet most do remember the run Groce led Ohio to in the NCAA tourney, beating UM and USF and almost knocking off NC. That was a high I don't remember this team taking its fans before or since.

Note: I don't go back as far as OCF. But I do go back to around 1980 as a fan.

Pretty well sums it up. Heck, I couldn't tell you what seed we were this year but I do know we lost in the first round on the road to Miami.

100%cat shows that revisionist history is alive and well in SEO. If you want to stand on that podium, the 3 seed better come with a Sweet 16. If we are a 9 seed, we better make it to the round of 32. That is what our history has yielded, and you can't claim one piece without the other

The permissive apathy and witty retorts remind me of our program leader. Put up or shut up and stop making "everyone is a winner" culture excuses.

Guess I'm the exception here.

The stars aligned the year we went to the Sweet 16.
The story might have been different if we didn't get USF for our second game.

Don't get wrong,I loved it,but the Georgetown game meant more to me.

That year nobody gave us any chance.

I still remember the announcers saying WHEN Georgetown plays Tenn.

I absolutely remember what happened in 2012. I was there in Cleveland. I taunted Akron players in the hotel from the bar after the game then had an awkward elevator ride with a few of them an hour later. I just choose not to over-glorify the run to the extent that some do. It's in the past, that coach is gone, but so many just can't let go or accept that it's unrealistic to expect results like that consistently. Look at our history. Look at the MAC basketball history. It has been rare in our history (at least in my lifetime, and that covers several coaching staffs) that we even finish as a top 3 team in the MAC, let alone make the NCAA tournament. We had Gary Trent for three years and only made one tournament with a historic great MAC player. Akron owned the MAC under Dambrot and won 0 tournament games, but I would love to have seen those conference title banners in the Convo. For the life of me, I can't figure out why some people think/thought post-Sweet 16 we were going to be Gonzaga all of a sudden. Groce left. Get over it.

I know zero people who expected to be Gonzaga. I know the same number of people who expected to be the 10 seed in the MAC tournament in year 4 of this regime. I believe expectations are warranted based on our pedigree. The excuses are old.

Speaking of Gary Trent.

Not to take away anything from going to the NCAA Tourney,BUT winning the Preseason NIT at the Garden, with everything that went along with it,including the 110 on the Today Show was just special.

The garbage of disregarding the health adversity the team suffered this year and looking blindly at end results is old and stale. Your attitude, and the attitude of others here of disregarding that adversity is like expecting a company to maintain production levels after half of their factories burned to the ground in 2 months time.

Explain this pedigree we have. The pedigree of the Hunter era with one NCAA tourney appearance? The O'Shea era, likewise? Or that 4 year window everyone likes to focus on, out of 96 years of program history? I was born in 1980. We have 6 NCAA tourney appearances in that now 38 year span. Averaging 1 tourney appearance every 6-7 years is a "pedigree" to you?

I think my favorite was that #9 seed that delighted everyone up in Providence. (who cares about the seed - it's about winning in March)

Equally tiresome are the cheerleaders who think the 10 seed was an aberration rather than a stark indicator of a decline in the program. Yes, this team was hit hard by injury, and yes, they'd have been a lot better healthy. Where we differ is just how much better, or perhaps how much better is good enough. We have the resources and commitment from the administration (in the form of the biggest basketball budget in the MAC) to be competing for championships every year. We're far from it, and the injuries just highlighted how few high-level MAC players are on scholarship at Ohio. The players put forth a great effort given the circumstances, but lots of other MAC programs are passing this one by and some fans are in denial about it.

By the way, if making the tournament every 6-7 years is your yardstick, we're going to be falling short of that soon as well.

I'd hardly consider myself a cheerleader. If it was a healthy season that resulted in something like this, I'd understand and agree that it's a horribly bad sign for the program. In my opinion, ignoring what happened this year to lead to the poor end result, would be/is incredibly foolish.

You're correct 100%cat, who are we to talk to pedigree. We have nothing to hang our hat on. The arrogance of the few of us to expect a winner is reprehensible. No history equals no future. I need to change.

We do not have the right to talk pedigree. That should be reserved for the MAC blue-bloods like Buffalo, Ball State, and EMU. I was out of line. We can't recruit those types of athletes! Have you seen Buffalo in January? We can't sell against that! And EMU...they have wonderful parking lots. While I am at it, I do truly love Athens with all my heart, its a birthrite, but Oxford really is better. We are lucky to still be D-1 for goodness sake.

Poor Saul. In year 4, he didn't have the recovery skills or the recruiting chops to handle (1) year long impact injury, (1) full season freshman redshirt, and a few missed games. He has the same number of scholarships as every other school in the MAC, yet he was dealt the hand of season ending death when Carter went down. I apologize for assuming our Division I coach could come up with a plan, its just such a shame we recruit like we are preparing to dethrone Shawnee State for Southeastern Ohio supremacy. We have uninjured scholarships literally sitting around.

In the spirit of refocusing my fandom, I apologize for loving what I really thought was something to be proud of. I should have known better.

There, I think I have become an apologist. Northern Illinois....We are coming for you. That is until you get better at which point we will be coming for you University of Rio Grande.

Exactly, it is totally unfair to not recognize that the injuries to Carter, Dartis, Mickle, and Laster had a major impact on this season. In many games this season our team was literally the "walking wounded." Some of these guys were playing through injuries and pain during much of the season. Then last year, we had the season ending injury to our MAC POY. It's been a very tough two years. I will grant that Saul should have recruited a deeper bench. I will acknowledge that it appears that he made a few mistakes in recruiting, but I will not concede that he is a "poor recruiter." I think we have a very good group of front-line players coming back next year -- Carter, Taylor, BVP, TK, Dartis, Jimmy G, and Block. If Butler returns, I think he has a great future with a little more development and "coaching up." And, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the new recruits steps up and surprises.

Remember when Western was the preseason pick to win this league? I guess we can hang our hat on being eliminated on the same day as the Broncos. Groce understands that in a one bid league, your regular season matters to an exten but March matters more. The guy wins when it counts, at least in this league.
Yep^^^^ In a one bid league, winning in March is the only thing that matters and the only thing people remember. Groce understands it very, very well.

Wow....I see you are getting roasted for this comment and deservingly so. Keep aspiring for those #3 seeds in MAC Tournaments. I'll take the coach who hung a Sweet 16 banner in the Convo. #12Months

Could be worse-just mention Joe Burrow or Jaaron Simmons in a thread and see what happens! :) :)
