Unfortunately, it is a sign of things to come, I believe. Unless MLB kicks in $$ to help fund college baseball (can they? or would they since college baseball competes with the minors?) through donations. Or the NCAA splits up money from other non-revenue sports (won't happen).

I thought baseball was a required sport or you couldn't be in the MAC. I thought every school had to have baseball, softball, volleyball, football and men and women's basketball. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I forget, but doesn't baseball just have -12-13 schollies? Of course it's a big team overall to travel ( to south to play early) costs a bunch

The thing that doomed Akron baseball was the years of ignoring the facility. The place is a shambles and the playing surface is a hazard as well as the dugouts, pressbox, and rotting bleachers. I'm sure the university would rather tear down the facility and build some new campus buildings in its place. The amount of construction that has taken place around the field is astonishing. I've attended a few games there over the last 5 years and there is always a good crowd watching baseball. This is indeed a sad development as baseball has been played on Akron's campus since the late 1800's. (probably the last time they made any improvements to the facility) The softball facility located next to the baseball field is really nice as is the soccer facility. It is evident by the lack of attention given the baseball facility that this was a planned cut originating years ago.

I'm not sure which sports are required, and my first thought was that baseball certainly would be one that was, but I've been told that it is not required.

Not sure either, however Buffalo had to start baseball to join the MAC, that I do know.

All I know is that more intercollegiate sports seem to be getting cut than are added. You have to wonder where it's headed in the long run.

You have to wonder if ice hockey or even soccer makes more sense for the northern schools like the MAC. Of course you can have both, but the other two may make more sense. Not my favorites though.

Did not Wisconsin cut their baseball program a few years back? I believe the reason was the problems of playing a baseball schedule that far north and the recruiting problems that naturally come with it as well.

If by a few years back you mean 25. They haven't had a team since 1991.

Thank you very much, I didn't realize it was that long ago.
