Weird. He is what, 50 years old? I get the focus on family but you still gotta work. Maybe he just lost the passion for this particular vocation...especially when you consider the bizarre timing of the decision.

Regardless, I wish him the best. I hope Ohio conducts a full national search for a coach and doesn't just hand the job to Moore. That is not a criticism of Moore, I just always think a program should always see what's out there.

Something is off here. The Rob Smith I played under wouldn't retire weeks from the start of a season. In his statement, he mentions that he is thankful for good health but I don't see any other reason that he would walk away so suddenly?

I know he has (had?) big goals for his career in baseball beyond Ohio but there's got to be more to this...

There is no need to speculate, the man is pursuing other interests in a new region of the country. Heck, he sold his house back in the summer, purchased a new one right away in his new location. He's happy, and good for him and his family. Super great people!

That's a relief. Leaves only a couple other reasons that I wouldn't want to speculate on.
There is no need to speculate, the man is pursuing other interests in a new region of the country. Heck, he sold his house back in the summer, purchased a new one right away in his new location. He's happy, and good for him and his family. Super great people!
Agreed they are great people. The speculation, however, stems from this announcement days before the season kicks off.

Pursuing opportunities in the industry outside of coaching was one of the remaining speculations I had. No better place in the country to pursue those interests either, I'm quite jealous!

By announcing days before the season starts you get to name an assistant coach, basically you get to take care of your guy! Not sure why there has to be any conspiracy theory here.

Because these type of announcements typically come with a "coincidental reason." That said you're probably right that there's nothing to it but for those who are not in the know it tends to be fishy until the details come out.
