How many full rides does Bobcat baseball have? Do they have as many as the top schools in the MAC?
NONE!
You get 11.9 scholarships in the sport of baseball, and you have 35-40 players. If you are getting 30% you are a pretty damn good player. Real fact, Marietta baseball players can go to school cheaper than an OHIO baseball player.
Facts. Baseball gets absolutely screwed when it comes to scholarship allotment, not even a debate.
I had only heard of 1 guy that was supposedly on a full ride during my time and he was gone after his freshman year, never to play D1 again. I was on 27% and still paying student-loans.
An historical question: Was Mike Schmidt on a full scholarship? Steve Swisher? Other Bobcat baseball legends of that era?
1. Mike Schmidt was a walk-on as a freshman. He was more a football/basketball star in HS, but had the bad knees and a family friend was head of the MAC, and called Coach Wren about taking Schmidt on.
2. Back then, before Title IX football controlled everything with massive scholarship numbers, which hurt all sports not named football and basketball.
3. Baseball had 4 scholarships, and they were split.
4. This is the day when student-athletes could work for money (some places, they'd be called the no-show jobs), but, at Ohio they would work in the dining halls for books, sell programs at basketball/football games, ect to earn their keep.
