The bobcats just opened up the season last week and no one is on this website talking about the team.

does anyone actually care what happens?

I kinda wrote what I thought on last weeks series, and it has like 7 views and probably 3 or 4 are myself.

I hope more people come to Trautwein Field this season than this website.

Hard to get excited about this team and schedule. If you have time go look at Miami's spring schedule and compare it to ours and tell me if you were a recruit where would you rather go?

Sorry have to disagree. Over the last 10 years Miami has had more players drafted, more all mac players, more mac championships, more tournament appearances, and an overall better record. True coaching makes a difference, but it all starts with recruiting, and we are getting beat in that area. And the fact that over 25% of our roster is from the Columbus area is ridiculous.

Looks like this year's recruits are doing just fine,,, hell, one is batted over .500 at this time!!!  and he didn't even consider Miami!!

So,, you hate the schedule, don't like the team, don't like the coaches, think players from Columbus suck, think Miami is so much better,   Why not do yourself a favor, prevent your frustration and DON'T come to any games, DON'T read the forums, and go find negative &*^( to spread about other programs!!

I will stay positive, root for the Bobcats, and not let negative Nancys like you affect my enjoyment of Bobcat baseball.  I know quite a few of this year's recruits, MUCH talent in this group.  I know a few Miami recruits,  Ohio did their homework and didn't recruit them.  They wouldn't have helped us!!  period.

I really didnt have to search for that info. If you are happy with the direction of the program than more power to you. I just hope our return to being a contender comes sooner than later.

I don't know about Miami having better recruits over the past years.  Perhaps that talent that is brought a long better.

Miami has had 30 guys drafted overall (although 4 of those guys were drafted twice, so actually 26 players) since 2000.

Bobcats have had 17 in that same time span. 

26 to 17 isn't that bad really if you think about it.

Miami has had 4 All-Americans to Ohio's 6 (actually 7 because Anthony Gressick received the award twice).

so as far as overall talent being brought in, I wouldn't say Miami's is better or anything like that.

Last 10 years Miami is 364-277-1 (167-121), with 2 MAC Tournament titles and 1 MAC Regular Season Title

Bobcats are 294-295-1 (154-133-1) with obviously no titles since 1997. 

So that Bobcats have had tons of individual successes over the past 10 years, just hasn't really resulted in wins. 

I wouldn't say that the recruiting has been bad.

p.s. Miami hasn't been what they were since Tracey Smith left Oxford.

Columbus is the largest metro area in the state.  Why wouldn't they go there to recruit?  Take a look at any Ohio college, and most will have a decent % from the local area.  Miami, yes more than 25% from Cincy area.  KSU, yes from NE Ohio.  BG, yes from NW Ohio all the way down I-75. 

The only place where you may not see that is in the top 20, but many of those southern teams are from the same state. 

Recruiting budgets aren't huge and also face it....that fact shows that most coaches are inherently lazy and go where they know.  Every school.

Players are seen at summer tournaments, prospect camps, and showcases.  I really don't believe that college coaches care too much where the player's hometown is located.  They see them on the field and decide if they are worthy of being recruited.  We have kids from Canada, New Mexico, West Virgina, Washington, Texas,Virginia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio.  What would give you the indication that we don't recruit kids from areas other than Columbus????   Baseball coaches don't make home visits, most recruiting is done by mail, phone, email, and summer tournaments, so recruiting budgets don't need to be big.  I think we are doing just fine.

Yeah, but a small consideration in the equation is that over 500,000 of the 2,2000,000 folks in the Cincy metro area don't live in Ohio.  So to say that Columbus (1,800,000)  is the third largest is not quite technically correct when you say "in the state".  Take that.

And it is common for most college students to stay fairly close to home, so naturally a high percentage of recruits interested in playing for Ohio are going to be from Columbus and the surrounding area. Look at any roster at any school for any sport. Chances are high that the majority of players are from not too far away.

Back to the Original Topic. I don't get excited about Baseball Season until April, I know that it starts in late Feb, but with it being as cold as it is usually Mid-April I get the baseball itch.

Looks like pitching has been pretty solid so far this year. Sticks..not so much. Only 1 regular hitting over .285 through 28 games?

It is the new bats, averages have taken a nose dive all across the country.  The traditional power bat companies like Easton have been effected the most.

7 Teams (over half) had team averages over .300
6 schools hit more than 1 HR a game, and the league average was right at one HR per contest.
Best Team ERA was 4.39
Only two teams had ERA's under 5
6 Teams had ERA's over 6

In 2011:
.300 is the Highest Team Batting Average
5 Teams have Batting Averages under .250
ONLY 1 Team is hitting 1 HR per game
9 of 12 teams are hitting fewer than .5 HR's per game
Team ERA leader is under 3.00
Over half the league (7 teams) have ERA's under 5

To answer the original question: I haven't paid a whole lot of attention in recent years to Ohio baseball.  This year I was kind of thinking of going to a game for the first time in awhile, but the more I read about this team the less interested I become.  It seems like the baseball program is falling off of a cliff.  It's downright depressing.  Tell me why I'm wrong.  Maybe you can get me down to Wren for a game!
