There's been talk in other threads about it, but we can post thoughts/rumors/speculation/reports/etc all one thread.

I have absolutely no idea how credible this person is, but their Twitter info is:

I hope the Marietta coach is on the short list.

I have serious doubts (as in I would drop dead from surprise) if Marietta's coach made himself a candidate. However, I have seen an extremely unconfirmed mention of Ashland coach John Schaly as a possible candidate. He's also the current president of the ABCA.

I know.  Just joking, in light of MC's two Div. III national titles in a row and six overall.

A step up in class and caliber, but perhaps a step down in focus and priority.

The right coach could put us at the Kent State level in 5 years. Once we get the IPF we will have everything Kent State has, only better.

There isn't a northern D1 school in the country who puts baseball #1. It's never going to get the support basketball and football get.

I'll guarantee you one thing...other MAC coaches are definitely taking notice with this hire. Ohio has been a sleepy giant (as far as northern baseball goes). Best weather, best field, and one of the best schools in the MAC (academics and college life). The MVC is an extremely tough conference and they always compete nationally. I believe the MVC was the 4th or 5th toughest conference this season, and they are usually in that area.

Looking forward to a tougher schedule and an upbeat atmosphere at Trautwein Field next spring. This is exactly the type of hire we needed. Getting a true southern power associate coach was going to be extremely difficult. We are basically getting an associate head coach from a conference that is usually a step up overall from the Big East and Big Ten in baseball.

Obviously have never met the guy or know what he is like, but this is a home run hire on paper.

What really was Smith's record as an assistant?

http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/061212aaa.html

By my count, he was 156-174 at Creighton, making him 328-341 overall. Also, 94-86 in the conference at Purdue is not a .730 winning percentage.

I checked the Creighton media guide and those numbers aren't right. Not sure where they got those.

Should be:
2007 - 45-16 (19-5)
2008 - 37-21 (16-8)
2009 - 31-25 (14-9)
2010 - 27-25 (9-12)

Actually, I think the records listed are Ohio's, except it's missing the two MAC tournament losses for this year. Glad to know he really does have a very good record at Creighton.

They've been fixed online now...but that's pretty bad to list Ohio's records as his own. No one should have to live down that mediocrity!

5 years?! With the talent on that team that went unused and unplayed this season they could be Kent State caliber in 3 years if he sees it and uses it. Trust me....I know, I watched a lot of Bobcat ball this season shaking my head in disbelief. It was very very frustrating to sit back and keep my mouth shut but I did and I'm so FREAKIN HAPPY about Coach Smith. Bring on the fresh new eyes and see what he does with some of these raw diamonds that need polished. Can't wait to meet Coach Smith & watch some Fall Ball in Athens! if you don't believe me... Start Googling the names of some of the current players. See what EVERYONE ELSE says about what they have done and what they are capable of. You may be quite surprised!
