I find it hard to believe that his play calling, pitch calling, sign calling, etc. is the reason for why they're losing games. Do you honestly believe that a freshman catcher should be calling pitches? I'd hope not. These kids are the ones on the mound who are walking 10+ batters a game, which is embarrassing. These kids are the ones making errors on routine plays. These kids are the ones who can't hit worth anything. To put all the blame on a coach is unfair and very unintelligent. You have no clue what these coaches do for these players to prepare them for games. Hell, none of them had even seen a scouting report in their whole careers before Smith. The only thing that needs to change is the players. Once he can recruit a higher quality of talent, that's when you will see results. Hence, it takes time to rebuild a program that hasn't won the MAC since 1997!
I certainly hope this isn't Coach Smith or anyone on the coaching staff saying this, because they definitely deserve to be fired immediately if it is.
Part of being a successful coach is bringing in talent then coaching them up. I don't care if you are a freshmen or a senior, the results have been absolutely pathetic and embarrassing. Also, for the record I'm sick and tired of hearing about how young the team is. I've been hearing this garbage for a decade now.
As far as I can tell, this coaching staff is not even close to getting these players prepared for games (and scouting reports at this level of baseball is an absolute joke and not worth the paper they are written on). With these results he will not be recruiting higher talent until he can prove he can win with what he has. Things better turn around before the end or the year or else their needs to be a change. This is just plain unacceptable.
