There's a school just up 33 that will probably come calling for Slanker. Based on his social media, he's a big NIL guy so this is likely to happen.

Alumni weekend is coming up (4/25 - 4/27). My guess is that some of us may be asked to pitch 🤣

I used to have a wicked curve ball in sandlot games that worked about half the time! [Only problem was that the other half of the time it wouldn't curve right and would sail over the catcher's head.]

How many innings you got? Think you could squeeze any inning out of Mobey?

Lost to Marshall, dropped 2 of 3 to VMI, lost to Dayton. Ho hum. Now 9-26.

Swept at Kent giving up 40 runs. Still have not one a single series in the MAC.

About the only intriguing thing to follow the rest of the way - Slanker has cooled a bit but still leads the MAC in HR (16), RBI (50) & Slug (.735).

Also worth noting true freshman Matt Ineich has been an elite contact hitter with a .410 BA and a 7% K rate. In today's climate it is going to be very difficult to keep either of these guys in the fold for next year.

The dreaded Mercy Rule was put into play last night. Now lost 30 games.

Dropped 2 of 3 to Miami. We almost had our first MAC series win and really shook up Miami's playoff standing but they blew the lead in the 8th on Sunday and lost 6-5.

Slanker had a rough weekend.

Blake Gaskey, who has started 11 games (next closest SP has 8) now has a full 9.00 ERA. I have to imagine that is the only pitcher in all of the NCAA with 10+ starts and an ERA of 9.00+. The only reason I can think you would stick with someone struggling that badly is he is young and you believe his stuff will shine thru with time...but he is a Senior. I know we don't exactly have aces waiting in the wings but throw someone, anyone else and see how they do and figure out if they can help you next year.

Time to get a new coach.

I know the answer will be “money,” but there seems to be so little effort put into anything involving this program currently. Terrible schedule, pitching is bad (when it’s an entire staff like this, I have to wonder if there’s talent but no confidence), stadium looks rough.

No one will ever change my mind that OU should be a regional baseball program. The right coach would dominate and bounce to a southern school. But this should be a launching pad for coaches (much like Trautwein Field is a launching pad when the wind’s coming off the hill and hitters realize “340” is really 325ish.

I hear you and agree with your points, however, I'd like to challenge your first thought. Has there ever been "effort" put into this program? What does that look like in your opinion? What are some first steps that would show effort is being made?

I really, really, dislike the half turf/half grass monstrosity that is currently occupying the Wren. It looks horrible at this point. I understand the need for northern schools to obtain a turf playing surface. I just wish somehow, someway, we did the whole damn field. That would be my first goal if I were to step in as head coach (outside of getting some arm talent in the program).

We just hired this one and I agree on the stadium, upkeep is horrible and had to build a new Wren memorial because they failed to upkeep the statue and it literally crumbled. Been replacincing wall sections piecemeal, rust in the water has turned brick rust color like the rest of west and south green.

To the turf point, they were advised against this half and half, but the coach at the time insisted. Now they want it all, but the issue is the cost is greater now without the full use of the last investment. I believe RPBobcat is the one who does turf projects or did them. Should have waited a year or two and afforded it all. IMO

Agree here on the turf. The indoor hitting area is abysmal as well. I peaked in last time I was on campus. It’s a falling down building.

Yeah, totally ignored in maintenance and overall care. I forgot about that area. Tore the outside ones down, or let them fall down, your pick.

The coach might be relatively new but he’s done nothing and was with the program before getting elevated. There’s no energy around the program at all. Regardless of record, there’s nothing the team is doing that actually excites the fan base. No promotions, no good teams visiting, no baseball-specific merchandise for fans to buy. It’s just “donate to help the team” and canned graphics on social.

Carbone for all we complain about did have pride in the program, at least to a point. Really trace back a lot of issues with the program when Toadvine unexpectedly passed away. Consistently getting multiple guys drafted a year, played a tougher schedule, had quality talent, Bob Wren Stadium sparkled, new lights, etc.

So where do you start? I mean for starters, a coaching staff with pride would probably spend some of their off time fixing up the stadium they call home. Make it a team building project. Not like they are above hard labor. Like most college teams, OU players prep and tarp the field.

There’s like 20+ D1 programs within 5 hours of Athens not in the MAC. Easy road trips. Open it up to 8 hours, like 60, and quite a few with better weather. Ohio has one of the more convenient locations in the country to bus to games, so there isn’t an excuse to not schedule better.

Pitching…honestly, it’s inexcusable. The math just doesn’t add up. There are definitely guys on the staff right now who could be solid D1 arms. You don’t have to be special to be effective in college. You do have to have confidence, and that falls on the staff.

NIL changes a lot. It’s a reality for all schools. There’s talent everywhere in baseball. All sorts of guys falling through the cracks to get out of high school, JUCO, and transfers. Present a program that doesn’t look like it’s falling apart (literally the batter’s eye last year when I was there was one big torn up tarp) and you have a consistent MAC and regional player.

Why was Moore ever hired. He was 81–130 at his previous junior college level. Usually you hire someone who has a winning record at in his previous head coaching gig. It just seems like a lazy "hire from within so you don't have to actually do a search because who cares for baseball anyway" scenario.

I heard several years ago, probably from someone here on BA, that Mike Schmidt, after years of estrangement, was back in fold and again we had good communication lines with him. If true, I don't think it would take more than a phone call to get him to pay for a buyout at this juncture.

Not to feed the troll Bobcat1996, but is Julie asleep at the switch again?

Well Schmidt is old and worried about his health issues I’m sure. He’s also not sitting on a ton of money compared to more modern players to just magically make everything better.

Nick Swisher donated a ton of money and his name is linked to the field at OSU now. His career could have played out much differently at OU, but the mild recruiting of the son of a legend at OU was always puzzling. He was right down the road.

I can't argue with any of your response, its spot on as much as I hate to admit.

Hiring Moore was probably the right move at the time. Remember, Smith left somewhat unexpectedly (BTC might have more background here) after winning a couple rings, something that hadn't been done since I think the late 90s. I played for both Carbone and Smith/Moore, which not a lot of alumni can speak to. Moore can coach and he knows the game very well and has been involved with top programs, so he has the pedigree. I think an area he lacks in is how to run a D1 program as the head man. Its more than just winning on the field, although that is priority #1.

Carbone couldn't teach the modern game but he knew how to build a program and took pride in areas other than W/Ls. He had the program in a spot where he could win recruiting battles based on facilities and campus life alone. Ohio was a destination school for MAC recruits because we held an edge in those areas. Unfortunately, the rings evaded him over the years.

The facility need serious upgrades, quite possibly at the worst possible time as it relates the current economy and this program's access to funds. This hurts us in multiple areas: recruiting, scheduling, growing the fan base, etc. Nobody wants to play/watch a game in a lackluster environment.

I don't even know where I'm going with this post, guess just airing out some thoughts after a horrible season as a frustrated alum.

Because the former head coach resigned weeks before the season started. Sound familiar? Even though said HC had sold his house in August and moved out west in the fall and his office was cleaned out before Thanksgiving. Coach Smith resigned on 1/21/2021

Yeah I didn’t want to say anything too much about Moore, but from the outside he does certainly look like a guy who can be an assistant but absolutely can’t run a program.

The whole Smith leaving thing was weird. It felt sudden, but it seems like it was well known by some for a while. Looked bad for OU I thought at the time, which makes hiring his assistant full time even weirder.

Carbone sucked up to the right people and played the game within the game in baseball coaching. He was even still recruiting great players each year. But he would label guys early, not allow them to grow, and constantly get out-strategized (at least the final decade of his career).

If the OU job opened up for real again, there would be some great candidates. A lot of people would be quick to say “we need an alum” but I actually don’t think that’s true. We should embrace being a stepping stone. OU will likely lose standout players yearly in today’s climate anyway, so let’s be AAA in the north instead of playing our current ragtag Indy ball.

One other random thought about Carbone: after Andrew See (2001 grad I think), did any of his players go into college baseball coaching? Not sure if there’s anything to that, but don’t good coaches breed a few coaches along the way? seems like he left a lot of players burned out.

Bobcats drop 2 of 3 at Akron, then the universe spares us being subject to a matchup of 2 down and out programs with Ohio vs Ohio State canceled.

Tough matchup with Ball State before wrapping with WMU. Bobcats are 1 game behind NIU in the battle to avoid last place.

I guess I don't get the Wren is falling apart, not a recruiting tool arguments. I've been to all of the Ohio MAC school fields, I think Wren is better than Akron, Kent, BGSU, and Toledo. I'd put Miami's field just slightly ahead of Wren.

When was the last time you were there?

When it was built, the goal was for it to be capable of hosting regional and super regional games (with temp seating installed if necessary). I wasn’t around when it was being built, but I know Carbone played a major role in making it a reality and making it truly shine.

A lot of the little things surrounding the stadium, honestly, I believe Carbone himself would have his teams chipping in each fall. He always made players learn how to maintain a field. Everyone had a job. If it could be done by the team to save some money, it would be labeled as taking pride in where you play.

The most recent times I’ve been there, the facility looked more like a city park. Not treated with any type of pride.

I don’t care about the other MAC teams. We had the best stadium in the league, and arguably a regional standout. With some TLC, it still looks very modern, with a lack of locker rooms on sight being the only glaring missing piece.

Given the amount of money Schmidt made, if he had any kind of competent financial advisor and invested it wisely, he should be sitting on plenty of cash to play the role of philanthropist to his Alma Mater's baseball program if he so desired.

In terms of health, I knew he had some issues a few years ago, but I haven't heard of anything recently. He may very well have recovered from those. He's very close to my age, and in looking at my own classmates I've discovered that while some can hardly walk across a small room due arthritis or other health issues, others are still playing pickup basketball. Not sure where Mike Schmidt would fall on that spectrum.

It has rotting wood in the facing last summer, holes in the outfield wall. I could go on, but won’t help us win any games.
