Spring news on guys in minor league camp is pretty much non-existent. Either he looked good and they send him to AA to start or they think he still needs some time at high A. We'll just have to check the rosters in a week.

Rough start to his AA career, going 3 2/3 giving up 4 runs. But only 1 BB to go with 5 K.

That was almost a month ago and he has not pitched since and he is on the IL. Can't find any info on the nature of his injury.

Joe is back in action and doing well so far. 3 innings, walked 4 and struck out 3, no hits no runs. Then his 2nd start back was a true gem, 4 scoreless, no walks, 1 hit, 4 K.

Altogether those 2 starts helped clean up his stats from his ugly 1st start and he is at a 3.38 ERA and a very nice 1.03 WHIP.

Joe had a great outing last time out - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K

Overall he is definitely getting hit and scored upon more in AA but is certainly holding his own. AA is in many ways the true test on the climb to the majors.
Striking guys out will keep their attention. 4.28 ERA in 9 starts.

MLB had Joe as the Rockies #14 prospect.

The walk numbers have been a little high this year, but other than that, he's been really good. Opponents hitting only .224 against him with just three home runs.

Only 46 innings pitched in 10 starts. 1-5 record.

I'm sure they're hoping he can start going longer than 4 1/2 innings per, but I wouldn't be shocked if they brought up him to AAA to end the season. His K numbers are pretty decent.

Not a happy update from his last 3 starts. 11 innings, 14 ER, 20 H, 6 HR, 3 BB, 17 K

The saving grace is the BB/K ratio (extremely important in prospect evals) was strong, but boy was he hit hard.

More of the same in the last 4 starts, BB/K is strong and his control issues have definitely improved, but they're hitting him. AA ball is tough sledding with some of these lineups. You never know what he is being told when in development, they may be working on a new pitch or explicitly telling him to focus on not walking batters for now and are less concerned with hits allowed. Overall I still feel like he is on track to move up to AAA next season and knock on the door of a callup with some decent success.

Rock is 2.4 years under the weighted age average for AA. In other words, he's well ahead of a typical player of his age.

Joe had 2 more starts at AA that went really well - 12 innings, 0 earned runs, 2 BB, 17 K. He was rewarded with a brief promotion to AAA to end the season with 1 start. It didn't go great - 2.2 IP, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. I am assuming there was some type of pitching plan that caused him to be lifted so early.

Joe finished with a 4.66 ERA (slight improvement) and 1.41 WHIP (slight decline) in 2023. His BB/K was much improved...34 BB, 112 K in 93 Innings.

Keep in mind this was only his 2nd full season after being drafted in July 2021, and as JSF pointed out he was young for a college junior and has been playing below league average age. Very exciting to be given the promotion at the end the year. Joe will truly be on the MLB doorstep next season, and there are few teams more desolate in pitching than the Rockies.

Oh man. The only one that comes to mind that was dominant was Ubaldo Jimenez. He was the oddity that did very well in Colorado but struggled once he moved on. But for his first 4ish years he was considered a true ace.

First to come to mind is Mike Hampton, no clue on his stats but I remember he was known for hitting homeruns as well.

I also think it's Ubaldo. Hampton was so bad in Colorado, they gave Miami cash and Juan Pierre to offload him (though they did get a career year from Preston Wilson!).

Yeah, Hampton was the Rockies attempt at bringing in a proven pitcher so I can see why he may stick out in your mind. But he was ultimately terrible with the Rockies. Jorge De La Rosa is another good option.

Any news on our lone MLB Bobcat? Last I heard he is likely going to AA for the year even though he is in attendance at Rockies camp.

I was just coming to say he appeared in a big league game on 2/24 against the D'backs. It did not go well...he went 2 innings, gave up 5 runs (3 earned), 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 WP. I am sure he was nervous as hell facing guys he just watched in the world series. He was greeted by Alek Thomas (single), Lourdes Gurriel (single) & Jace Peterson (double). He walked MVP candidate Corbin Carroll, then picked off his pinch runner. At least he somewhat recovered after the rough start, which shows them something.

It was a split squad game, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is the only MLB appearance he makes this spring. I think if he has a good camp (presumably playing minor league games), he could break with AAA. Just a matter of seeing where they assign him in 3ish weeks.

Joe was traded to the Rays on March 21st for former 1st round pick SS Greg Jones. The move was motivated by roster constraints as Jones needed to be on the 40 man while Rock did not.

From an organizational standpoint and their reputations of developing pitching, this is a Godsend for Joe. But from a depth perspective, it makes making the big league club a bit tougher given the Rockies staff is dreadfully bad.

Joe broke camp with AAA and the Durham Bulls. He went 4 innings, 0 BB, 6 K and 2 runs (2 solo HR).

Rock now pitches in the International League. The IL, after COVID, went to weeklong series.

Bobcat fans living in central Ohio will be happy to know that Durham visits Columbus, also of the IL, the first week of September. Additionally, SBH will be happy to know that Columbus will have a Dime-a-Dog Night Tuesday, Sept. 3.
